We were at the Washington Monument on 10/22. While in line I asked one of the rangers if people were still allowed to walk down the steps once they were finished up on top. The views are excellent and it's worth going, as it is free as well but some advise on the ques. We went in beginning of August, probably the peak of the tourist season. We got there early but u need to be there by 7.30 to get tickets. Well worth it more

Ticket distribution begins at 8:30am. We went out at about 7am to get tickets, and there were still some good times available when we got to the front of the line. We reserved our tickets online - a little confusing but it worked - and went up at 9am - well worth it! Next time we'd like to walk down but the stairs are only open in the warm weather - don't forget your camera! more

This is a must see attraction! I strongly suggest ordering tickets online. Our tickets were for 1pm. We got there around 12, and all of the handout tickets for the day were gone. To get a ticket, you can either obtain one from the website (URL elsewhere on this site) or queue at the small ticket booth a short walk from the base of the monument (not the one at the very base).
