A charming B&B, staff are warm and friendly. Food is a good standard. Rooms are comfy and very clean, they are quirky and individual. When we booked we where told that we had to eat in the restaurant on one of the evenings, which worked out that the two course meal cost us £50 which was very expensive, we could... more

Having decided to have a weekend in Hay on Wye exploring book shops, I needed to find somewhere for us to stay for a night. Tripadvisor listed the Old Black Lion as most highly recommended in the town, and I must say our expectations were exceeded. The best feature was the food - local, fresh and really well cooked. Our... more

Firstly, we liked the ambiance of the inn; the old furniture, crooked walls, beams and low ceilings, the comfy chairs in the bar (and the teddy!) We stayed just before Christmas and the hotel was fairly quiet, so we ate in the bar (it is not a 'drinkers' bar), and there was a friendly atmoshpere with pleasant, understated Christmas decorations.... more

I agree with the previous reviews about this being the "real deal." It has the uneven floors, low ceilings, and authentic beams. However, our rooms were also situated right above the pub/restaurant area which means that it was also a bit noisy. I would not recommend this hotel for older travelers or people who cannot traverse stairs very well. For... more

This is a genuine old fashioned coaching Inn in the lovely Welsh village of Hay-on-Wye, if you are going to explore this little village with it's myriad of bookshops and castle then this is an idillic place to stay while doing so. Just one word of warning the ceilings are low, and the floors can be uneven, if you are... more

We really liked this place and would definitely recommend it. The bedroom was comfortable and had everything we needed and, like the rest of the place, was spotlessly clean. The meal we ordered in the bar was excellent and good value and the breakfast was lovely. All the staff were friendly and obliging and the car park was free which... more

Stayed here for two nights after seeing it while visiting Hay previously. It is a nice place with a nice feel and charm about it and definitely has a sense of the past about it without being cheesy. The bar and restaurant rooms are very nice and pleasant to eat in although they do get very, very busy. Excellent breakfast.... more

I booked to spend new years eve at the Old Black Lion with my partner. We had visited Hye in the summer and thoroughly enjoyed our meal there. When New Year came we had a wonderful suprise, that my partner was in The Queen's New Year Honours List! She had been awarded an M.B.E. The pubs owner, Dolan Leighton, really took... more
