hi |

From Santo Domingo to any resort in Bavaro, you are looking at a 3 to 4 hour drive on average. Cheers PCMike
|
3-4 hours depending on the traffic and driver.

You don't want to take this adventure, passed this airport on my way to the city on an excursion and it was a far way. hopely if you do this please travel during daylight because the highway doesn't have lights and many times my heart way in my mouth. Fly into Punta Cana Airport. Jeff

If you are going to PUNTA CANA WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU GO TO SANTO DOMINGO AIRPORT????? Fly direct to PUNTA CANA and save yourself a real bad headache and maybe have no nerves left when you arrive. The roads are not the greatest and as stated in another post NO STREET LIGHTS!!!!!
|
the reasons to choose an other airport than punta cana are mostly very simple. one is that a specific offer is only available with a flight to st dgo, and during peak season the available seats to the heavily busy but small punta cana airport are occupied, so the only chance to reach the destin would be a flight via Las Maericas airport in st dgo. the airport is located east of the capital city, so the ride takes much less time than the ride to a santo domingo city tour, but a 3hrs -3 1/2 are absolutely the norm. missing street lights should not be a concern, not even 1% of the streets on the island have street lights, so the drivers are sure used to drive on exactly those non lighted roads. happy travel Mike

please can some one tell me what difference does no street lights make! all of us people who live in the countryside,(not in a town ) do not have street lighting when driving in the dark at night time. is that not what your car headlights are for. bg
|
A big difference here remember is that you have to drive through busy towns, sometimes during blackouts, with kids & mopeds & dogs running across the highway and many vehicles don't have lights either - it's quite chaotic - not at all like Glasgow's country roads - although you must still get some sheep and haggis jumping out from behind bushes I guess! I would never recommend anyone drive to Santo Domingo after dark - it's much safer as a passenger on a bus but on every journey you are likely to see an accident - you just have to hope & prey you're not involved in one bb

the biggest hazard is deer jumping in to your windscreen and smashing your car, also cows ,sheep, and drunks on there way home in the middle of the road , walking, as its easier to see the white line if there is one or the side of the road if there is not a line, also various wild life. bg

right BoyBavaro, it is different here, specially with still many vehicles on the road without the expected/needed lights working and a big number of loose animals on the roads, but on the other hand it is nothing new, it always had been like that, so who learned to drive on dominican roads is used to exactly those situations. i often wonder myself that not more happens on the roads specially due to free animals, not to talk about the bunch of animals in their big Jeepetas driving drunk and in a way like they would be the owner of the roads, ha ha. but not so may decades ago european(in my case german) roads in the villages on the countryside been only lightened on the mainroads, and outside of the village nothing is lightened there til today, but of course much less animal-traffic than over here. btw, BB, where you been?? did not see you around on the bord lately, hope all is fine Mike

Hey bg It is very apparent that you have not driven on the roads in the DR. We all think that the roads at home are in bad shape but they are wonderful compared to some of the roads we have been on in the DR!!!! We have POT-HOLES they have CRATERS in some spots so you can imagine what it would like to hit one of these in the dark even with headlights on the vehicle!!! We inquired about renting a car in FEB. when we were there and our tour rep said it was not recommended due the cost of insurance and to quote her-THE WAY PEOPLE DRIVE HERE. We have seen this first hand on some of the excursions we have been on. I was terrified even on the bus to our resort never mind driving myself.
