“Convenient location and great service”

Palace Hotel Tokyo

5 of 5 stars
Danville, CA

This hotel is in a great location, four blocks from Tokyo (JR Train) station and across the street from the Otemachi metro subway station, one of the major subway hubs in Tokyo. In addition, the view of lush greenery outside the window looking over the Emperor's Imperial East Garden is an amazing luxury in this hectic city. I've stayed in other hotels in Tokyo (Imperial, New Otani, Shinjuku Hyatt), and no other hotel had this combination of greenery and convenience (for tourists). Building and interior design is looking dated, but immaculately maintained.

Front desk and bell service is professional and efficient. English is spoken well here. Concierge service was uneven. The western breakfast buffet was well presented, above-average in quality, in a bright, open atmosphere. There is an eggs-to-order chef which is needed if you don't like the "runny-soft" scrambled eggs Japanese are fond of. Breakfast food service was friendly and amazingly efficient. They had memorized our preferences by the 2nd day. You will be sharing the buffet with a lot of businessmen.

Rooms facing the Imperial Palace gardens (2 sides of the hotel) are large for Tokyo. However, we noticed when we went by in the morning that the rooms NOT facing the gardens are much smaller. The rooms seemed recently-rennovated, with good ventilation and were immaculate. Everything was in perfect working order. We stayed at this hotel entering and leaving Tokyo, and each room was decorated differently (see photos). The bathrooms were very small compared to the size of the room, but efficiently-designed. There is CNN and BBC for english-speaking news addicts. If you do not have a laptop, there is a business center to the left of the front desk with PC's and internet access at about $5 for 30 minutes.

The only disappointment was the Japanese restaurant Wadakura in the basement of the hotel. It was raining, so we decided to eat sukiyaki without leaving the premises. While they cook it at your table, at about $100 per person I would have thought they would not have allowed the Kobe beef to overcook. Attitude was also indifferent...unusual for Japan.

If you don't want to pay the US$8 for a beer in the hotel's mini-bar or would like some snacks or bottled water, there is a small convenience store in the subway station, entrance C-10 (not the first but the 2nd subway entrance across the street from the hotel). The same location has some affordable japanese restaurants.

If you come into Tokyo on the Narita Express (NEX) train from Narita Airport and this is your first time in Tokyo, would recommend following ANY Taxi exit sign out of Tokyo station (absolutely a 4-story madhouse) and taking a taxi to the hotel rather than walking so you don't start going in the wrong direction and get lost. About 710 yen for a taxi minimum (about $7), and of course no tipping.

We were able to get a good rate for this hotel from JTB (Japan Travel Bureau) at $222/night, and will choose to stay here again if we come back to Tokyo.

“Love the location”

Palace Hotel Tokyo

5 of 5 stars
Singapore
May 13, 2008

I holidayed while my husband was there for work. The location worked for us pretty well as he walked to work while I used the metro which is about 1-2 mins walk to explore Tokyo. It is very convenient as the major lines pass through Otemachi station.

The hotel is a nice and quiet place to come back to after a day of exploring the buzzling city. The view of the Imperial Palace which greeted us first thing in the morning was lovely too.

We stayed for 6 nights and throughout the stay, we have no complaints. The rooms were spacious, clean and well-kept and the staff were all polite and helpful. I remembered requesting the receptionist to book a day tour (for 8am the next day) at midnight and the staff contacted the travel agent to make all the arrangements.

The restaurants do not appeal to us but that's not a problem as we tend to eat out at other places in Tokyo before taking a late train back.

It's a shame they have plans to tear down and rebuild the hotel which was opened in the 1960s. Will miss the quaint place and will try to visit before they tear it down next Jan.

“Great Base for the Imperial Garedens”

Palace Hotel Tokyo

4 of 5 stars
Gosford, Australia
Apr 17, 2008

The Palace Hotel is a lovely base if you want to view the Gardens in the Imperial Palace.

It has beautiful rooms that suprisingly are decked out with Victorian Decor. The rooms are quite large and they have very comfortable beds. The Bathroom is rather large compared to any bathroom at a traditional japanese hotel. The toiletries are very nice and there are plenty.

The breakfast in the "Swann Restaurant" is very nice, it has a good combination of Western and Japanese foods and there is plenty of fresh beautiful fruit. And the service is fantastic.

All in all it is a lovely hotel that is a great base to start your trip in Japan, however be aware that it is not very close to the hussle and bussle of Ginza, Shinjuku or Harajuku.

  • This TripAdvisor Member:
    • Liked — The Fact that is was so close to the Imperial Gardens
    • Disliked — It is not particularly close to anything else ie. lack of Restaurants around the area

“Palace Hotel Good Choice for Cherry Blossom Viewing”

Palace Hotel Tokyo

4 of 5 stars
Tulsa, OK
Apr 14, 2008

Super friendly staff is what makes the Palace Hotel above average. As others have said, its a bit dated but clean. The location worked for us because I could walk across the street at 6am to photograph cherry blossoms. The view from our room overlooked Imperial Palace entrance, very pretty. Standard rooms don't have that view, book Superior or better for that.

On their website you can sign up for their membership card, which offers a few perks, 10% off at the restaurant, a fruit basket, late checkout. The food is very expensive at the hotel, find the Marunouchi Bldgs. a couple of blocks away for a slightly cheaper meal. One of the drawbacks of this area is the lack of more reasonable restaurants close by, but the Tokyo station is close enough to get anywhere you want pretty easily. The Hotel says to get off at the Tokyo station but if you want to save some steps get off at the Otemachi stop, you can see the hotel about a block away.

I would recommend this hotel, and would stay there again.

“Ok hotel”

Palace Hotel Tokyo

Apr 7, 2008

We have just reurned from Japan. Our agent booked a double non smoking room. It was tiny, the bathroom tiny and the view was non existent. After a fuss we were offerd a much larger room on a high floor but it was a smoking room which although didnt smell too bad still had a faint whiff. The bathroom was much bigger and a king size bed. The location is in a very quiet part of Tokyo with not too many shops or restaurants. it is in need of updatingWe were very disappointed wit it. brakfast was ok, rather limited but ok.
