We just got back from Pompano, and I'm a little surprised at how overwhelmingly positive most of the reviews are. Most of the reviews rave about the staff, and they are definitely one of the best things about Pompano. The staff are incredibly friendly, warm and accommodating. We brought a small infant, and we were overwhelmed by how the (highly international by the way) staff went out of their way to accommodate us. It's obvious that Pompano makes this a priority. The resort feels family-owned, which is a really nice and unusual thing. The location is extraordinary. We didn't care that the golf course is all dug up for refurbishing because we're not golfers. It's noticeable that they're doing "construction," but it's certainly not distracting. The not so stellar things are:
* The fitness center is pretty bad. The equipment feels old and second-hand, it's hot (even with the AC running, it was usually around 80 degrees in there), and it could be cleaner. There are spiders hanging in the corners (those stringy ones that even an arachnophobe like me can handle, but still, it just looked dirty and a bit creepy). There's one TV which is not visible from most of the cardio machines. It is in no way a "spa-level" fitness center. I would have preferred to pay extra for a nice on site gym.
* The food is pretty good, but not great---I was disappointed and surprised that a place that obviously is trying to compete with places like the Reefs has relatively average food. From the bread, which is obviously bought pre-baked and frozen, to the small portions, to the not very imaginative menu, to the over-done meat and fish, it just isn't on the level of what you would expect. If you're used to eating in good New York restaurants, you'll be disappointed. The one thing that truly stands out is the very generous size of the glasses of wine. Still, good food is really important to me on vacation, and Pompano just wasn't great. Better than a cruise, but that's not saying too much. (The mixed drinks weren't anything to write home about either---generic and rather weak overall.) We did exchange dining at the Reefs one night, which was excellent. I wish we had stayed there.
* The rooms. We had a standard room, so I wasn't expecting the presidential suite, but the decor felt very 80s. Rather Holiday Inn. There was a coffee pot with decent coffee, but the creamer powder was all crusty, it came out like a flat beige card that you had to dissolve in the coffee. And there wasn't enough of it. Why not provide little half and half packs in the fridge? The were more spiders in the corners of our room/bathroom, not just the stringy ones. Obviously the housekeeping comes in to clean the rooms, leaves the door open, and never looks behind the door. The bed was not horrible, but not especially comfy, and the kind size bed was of course 2 twins pushed together.
Also:
The beach is small, but so is the resort, so it didn't feel crowded to us.
Overall the resort felt very homey, the staff was phenomenal, and we did have a wonderful stay. It just wasn't at the level I hoped it would be, and thought it should be, considering what we paid and where else we could have stayed for that amount of money.
