I just returned from my first trip the the Caribbean area - Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. The Gran Ventana Beach Resort was recommended by a friend and after reading many good reviews that's where we chose to stay. Arriving a couple of days ahead of our friends who had been there before, we did not know what to expect - we were directed right to the hotels shuttle van and were greeted on the reception desk with a drink. We were quickly checked in and shown to our room. I found the staff at the Gran Vantena to be quite friendly and accommodating. Our room had 2 double beds and spacious bathroom, both of which were quite clean. We never saw a bug the whole time we were there! You couldn't really unpack as the 3 dresser drawers were quite small, however, I ususally live out of my suitcase anyway, though I did hang up several items in the roomy closet! The one thing I that was missing that I think all guest rooms should have is an iron and ironing board as clothes always gets wrinkled when travelling!
I found the food to be pretty good - not knowing what to expect! While some dishes were repeated, there was always something different at each meal and it was not hard to find things that appealed to my not too adverterous palette. My biggest problem was there was a odd taste to the anything liquid in a cup, perhaps it was what the dishes were being washed with - anything straight out of a bottle was fine! It also found it hard to have a good cup of tea and should I ever return to this part of the world I'll be bring some good old Tetley and a couple of tins of Carnation tin milk with me.
The only other issue for me is that I don't drink alcohol, and they had a very small and limited selection of non-alcoholic drinks, other than just soft drinks! When requested they did try to make me a couple non-alcoholic versions or other drinks, but I could not even drink them! When I'm somewhere on vacation I like to have a 'special' drink in my hand the same as everyone else and felt that in such a tropcial resort, it would not be asking too much to have some nice tropical non-alcoholic drinks available.
The pool area was quite clean and by late day the pool had a lot of the surrounding vegetation in it. It was the tail end of thier busy season and we had no real problems getting chairs either at the pool or on the beach, which is where we spend most of our time. We had to seek out shaded areas once we got too much sun, and unless you were up early, there was usually no thatched shade trees available on the beach, but we always found a spot near the fences under the trees. There was always a nice breeze blowing on the beach and most afternoons it got a little stronger so the beaches became a little less inhabited. I tried snorkeling for the first time just around our beach and was delighted to see some tropcial fish in and around the reefs close to shore!
Be warned, there will be vendors peddling their wares while you are enjoying the beach, but if you are not interested just tell them no and they usually carry on - you can everything from a massage to a wooden carving, and about a 15 minute walk will take you to the Orange Flea market - now I know why they call them flea markets because the vendors swarm you like 'fleas on a dog' to try and get your business! Never take the first offer and haggle with them until you get a price your comfortable with - they are pretty much selling the same stuff so be prepared to walk away and go the the next booth to get the prices you're looking for! It was certainly a unique experience for me!
We only went on the one excursion - the Outback Safari, which we all enjoyed very much. It's a great chance to see the real Domican and see how these people really live, and I would recommend it highly to anyone visiting the area!
Overall, my first experience in the Dominical Republic was a posititive one and I look forward to returning again some day!
