My wife and I had reserved and prepaid a 'oceanfront Jr. suite" through LuxuryLink 'a la carte' for a week. Fortunately I had printed out a description of the various rooms from the Fairmont website, as when we were shown our room it was on the back side of the Princessa tower, not oceanfront in the Pyramid or Marqessa as represented in the description, so I requested they change our room to the accomodations we paid for. They then moved us to a oceanfront unit in the Marquesa tower, which, even with well worn furnishings would have sufficed had it not been for the constant jackhammering on the adjacent property, and the noisy AC. We didn't notice these faults until after we had unpacked our bags, but the noise was such that it would have been unbearable, so I phoned the front desk and requested another room. Finally after a total of 2 hours since out arrival they showed us to a nice ocean front room in the Pyramid tower. Meantime the bellman was carting our bags from room to room. In hindsight we should have left our bags in the lobby until we had seen the room. From prior reviews, it sound like others have had similar experiences.
After settling in we asked where we could get some good Mexican food. The Hacienda Restaurant was recommended, which upon our arrival was quite impresive with nice table by the water and strolling musicians. Upon looking at the menu, however, I was disappointd to see limited choices of what I consider to be Mexican food...no enchiladas. tacos, etc., although there was a chille Rellano...but at a cost of over $20...for ONE! (I ordered it as an appetizer and the cheese inside wasn't even melted!) This place is A La Carte & the prices are high! Had a ribeye steak with a side of beans....cost $35, and the steak was comparable to what one would get at Sizzler...although I think Sizzler may be better. This thing was scrawney! The wine was pricey, and the corkage fee $25 when you bring your own.
Wish I could be visiting from Europe, as the Euro certainly goes further than the US dollar. Never-the less our exchange rate with Mexico has actually improved since I was in Puerto Vallarta earlier this year...now about 11 to 1. Just don't exchange at the hotel. I made a mistake in telling the front desk when I checked in that I would charge to the room and settle in pesos at the end of our stay. They then conveniently said my credit card was denied, despite the fact I had advised the CC co. of the trip, and used it elsewhere in Acapulco. So I put up $500 cash which they then credited to me in pesos at 10.25. Thereafter I went to the bank, got pesos, and paid all charges in cash.
Over the course of the week it became apparant that this resort caters to wealthy Mexican famlies and conventions. There were several conventions going on at once, and that meant our favorite pool was closed mid-afternoon so the staff could set up for the evening activities. And then on Friday & Saturday the State Governor & Mexican President arrived which really made a mess of things...military police everywhere, metal detectors, screeneing you as you came and went. And Friday night the partying never stopped! Even at 7 in the AM people were hollering and carrying on.
Speaking of pools, they were very nice and sufficienly large. Wonderfull waterfalls, a monkey bridge, and beautiful foliage. This coupled with the excellent surfing out front, perfect weather, and I must say, a very accomodating staff. Service was very good. Americans are definitely in the minority...or at least they were this week...maybe 5% of the guests.
This was our first time to Acpulco, and we probably would not have been so critical had we not spent so much time on prior trips to many other Mexican coastal resorts. We went off property most nights and found much better food elsewhere. The taxi fare is worth it, plus there are georgeous views along the way. Overall the Fairmont hotels are on the best surfing beach in the area, and they esentially own it. It is a beautifull, broad beach with nice soft sand! Very picturesque.
