“Great Resort - Great Vacation!”

Grand Mayan Acapulco

5 of 5 stars
Libertyville, Illinois
May 12, 2008

Other than a small "blip" during the registration process at the Grand Mayan (which worked to our benefit), our stay at this resort was relaxing and memorable. Accommodations are above average as are the resort amenities. The grounds are first class and extremely well maintained. Our group ranged in age from 9 years to 50+, and everyone found activities to enjoy. Service staff were efficient and responsive. Food was decent overall, but best at the poolside restaurants (skip the crepes in the Mondo restaurant as these were the worse we've ever tasted!). Our vacation was enhanced by the services of Roberto Alarcon (email me for contact info) and his co-worker Alberto. Both were friendly, attentive, always on-time, valuable sources of information and well worth the money! Roberto speaks English very well and Alberto is open to learning more English (likewise, he provided some in our group with Spanish lessons, and he sings... beautifully!) We were at the resort at the tail end of high season so the pools, beach area and lazy river were not crowded. We never had to wait in line to dine at the restaurants. We attended both the Mexican and Cuban evening extravaganzas which included lively entertainment, unlimited drinks and cultural food. Beware, food served during Cuban night is spicier than what is served during the Mexican event. One drawback for the Grand Mayan is the isolated location. Most in our group were fine spending their day at the beach or pool, but one would have liked greater access to exploring the area. The sand on the beach was burning HOT so be prepared! We rented our condos directly from owners. Not once were we approached about buying a timeshare. Our group would definitely recommend the Grand Mayan to families with children. Young adults and singles might not find enough evening activities to satisfy the urge to party, although perhaps this is less of an issue when the resort is filled to capacity.. Never had to wait to use a PC in the cyber cafe. Security was abundant, but appeared to be relagated to checking beach bags for prohibitive items (coolers, glass containers, etc.) and checking wristbands. Cashless system worked well for us. Overall, an A+ vacation.

“Nice honeymoon”

Grand Mayan Acapulco

May 11, 2008

My husband and I choose this as our honeymoon destination. We got it through my parents' timeshare (RCI). I had read tons of reviews on this website, both good and bad, and I was armed and ready for whatever was going to come my way! We had absolutely no problems checking in, which I had heard horror stories about regarding RCI timeshares. They even let us check in early! When we checked in I knew we wouldn't have an ocean view room because that is saved for mayan timeshare holders. Our view from the room was still pretty and we had more privacy for our balcony.
The food wasn't the best, but it was good enough to eat. We did go to the grocery for some items for our kitchenette.
The part of our trip which was the best was Benjamen Alcorn. He was our tour guide/taxi. He took us on a wonderful tour, a lot cheaper than the resort offered and more personal! We ate out three nights at wonderful restaurants and had the best views, thanks to Benjamen. He and his brother take time and get to know their customers and give amazing tours/rides/reservations for great prices! If anyone would like their email, please contact me.
Overall, great time had by all!

“Grand Experience at the Grand Mayan”

Grand Mayan Acapulco

May 9, 2008

My husband and I went to the Grand Mayan in Acapulco April 13th thru 20th for our 5th anniversary. We have stayed at the worst of places in the Dominican to the best which is Sandals. This resort gets a definite 5 star rating. After having a bad experience at an RCI location in a different country, I was terrified to go through RCI again. But this by far is one of the prettiest locations. From the time we walked through the entrance of this resort to the end I was impressed. We were not haggled once by anyone. The restaurants were wonderful. Our room was first class. We had a large one bedroom with a huge balcony and a personal infinity pool on the balcony with a full kitchen. The rooms were cleaned twice a day with turn down service every night. Please tip them b/c they are so nice and very thankful. The property is also very secure. There are guards that blend in with the crowd. I also recommend doing the breakfast 5 day coupon package. It was $116 for 6 coupons (5 for breakfast and 1 brunch coupon that could be used for brunch or a dinner). We also got a fitness center/spa package for 5 days. We both worked out daily and the facility is number 1. Everything is very clean. I did a spa package for massages that were extremely relaxing. The sauna and jacuzzi on the women's side are spectacular.

Our tour guide Benjamin Alacon was by far the sweetest tour guide ever and was very accomodating. He was waiting at the airport for us. We used him for all of our tours (airport, city, clift divers, late night partying pickup and nice restaurants). He was always on time. We tried majority of the restaurants on the property including room service and never had a bad experience. Benji took care of us off the property. We went out every day. I highly recommend Benji and his family. He took us everywhere and he recommended some of the best restaurants in the area. If you love steak you have to visit Su Casa. If you love seafood try Playa Del Mar but only the one that Benji recommends. The snapper, shrimp and lobster are caught fresh daily and are grilled once you pick your items. Awesome!!! Under any circumstance do NOT go to El Fagon in the city. My husband got extremely sick. This restaurant was not suggested by anyone. We just so happened to be out and were hungry. Bad choice.

I am a top shelf margarita queen and I had by far the cheapest and best ones in Acapulco. $3-5 ones that taste like gold. We partied down at the strip almost every night. The people are very accomodating and appreciate you trying to speak the language. Remember that the taxi drivers are beast. They are all competing for your service so make sure you bargain them down. If they don't take it someone else will. There are tons of them.

I LOVE ACAPULCO AND I LOVED MY EXPERIENCE AT THE GRAND MAYAN.

“Good Place”

Grand Mayan Acapulco

4 of 5 stars
Nevada
May 9, 2008

We traded into The Grand Mayan through RCI. This hotel is very nice, but it doesn't have the usual stuff in the rooms that we are use to having in a Top of the Line Resort. The kitchen was very poorly stocked. We didn't even have a skillet or steak knives. The rest of the room was very nice. Outstanding beach, but have to watch the under tow.

For two weeks, I never got the towel boy at the pool to smile.

I would go back to Acapulco, but probably stay downtown.

“Grand Style That's Family-Friendly”

Grand Mayan Acapulco

4 of 5 stars
Barrie, ON
May 8, 2008

We booked our stay through a timeshare exchange in a Grand Mayan 1 B/R suite. This is a spacious, well-appointed unit with kitchen and balcony plunge pool. The weather was perfect all week.

Likes:
- Luxury throughout
- Long, wide beach perfect for close-in swimming and body surfing BUT: not suitable for snorkelling; ATV's on beach a nuisance.
- Great on-site activities for all ages, including water park for kids
- Friendly and efficient staff
- Senote-inspired swimming 'canal'

Dislikes:
- Some distance from city centre which means hefty cab fares and delays due to traffic
- Limited restroom/changeroom facilities near beach
- Prices in main restaurant breathtaking. Beach grill/lunches and room service more reasonable

This is a large resort but the well-landscaped grounds and expansive beach help thin the crowds out. We did not rent a car but arranged the services of Roberto Alarcon (robertoalrey@yahoo.com.mx) with his A/C Suburban. Ask him to drop by Mega or Wal-Mart for groceries. Friendly and courteous. Favourite restaurants in town: Su Casa and Linda Vista (both with gorgeous sunset vews of Santa Lucia Bay) and El Zorrito - casual Mexcican food on the main 'strip'. We took care with water and fresh produce but still came down with traveller's tummy. Scuba and snorkelling recommended through Aculpulco Scuba Center (www.acapulcoscuba.com). A 2-tank dive off nearby Isla La Roqueta was US$75. Local sites worth visiting: Peace Chapel, la Quebrada (the cliff divers), nearby Flea Market, and Fort San Diego (A/C with some exhibits in English). A side trip to Coyuca Lagoon was a bit of a disappointment. The boat ride on the lagoon was pleasant enough but the beach was no better than Grand Mayan and the trip back gridlocked. We heard that the trip to Taxco was good but you need to allow about 3 hrs each way. In summary, well worth a week or two!
