“I wish we lived in Whistler!”

Summit Lodge

5 of 5 stars
DORSET
Mar 26, 2008

Whistler was the fourth of six destinations on our Honeymoon to Canada. We drove there from Kamloops which took 4hrs. I really wish that we had booked to stay for more than 4 nights and had less nights in Vancouver. At first we found Whistler a little strange, a bit like Disney without the music. The place was very clean, very well kept and easy to get around plus the people were extremely friendly. We loved Whistler, there was so much to see and do, it was fantastic, i just wish we were young enough to take advantage of all the job opportunities for people from other countries between the ages 18 and 30. When we visited there was a large outdoor adventure area for children that had everything from horse riding to rock climbing. This seemed to be THE place for mountain bikers - there were hundreds (but they were not in the way). There were lots of shops, places to eat and, much to my husbands relief, a decent gym. There is a really nice lake side park on Lake Alta where you can picnic, swim or kyak, we even saw a Bald Eagle. We paid $410 to go on a 'Whistler Blackcombe Bear and Wildlife Tour', a lot of money i know but it was almost guaranteed that we would see a bear and i REALLY wanted to see a bear. I just wish we'd known about this company before wasting a fortune on trying to see bears in Banff which turned out to be a complete waste of time. In Whistler we took a VERY bumpy off road journey with a guide who really knew his stuff and took us quite close to 6 black bears during the evening at one point we saw a mother (Zoe) with her 3 yearlings.

Our hotel was great, clean with friendly efficient staff. Our room was big, comfortable and eventhough it overlooked the not too crowded pool we were not disturbed by any noise (the pool closed at around 10pm). Parking was under the hotel and cost $20 per 24hrs.

Our time here was (to quote the young Canadians we met) Awesome for sure! We would certainly stay here again. I hope you enjoy your time in Canada as much as we did.

I will be writing reviews and posting photo's on Tunnel Mountain Resort - Banff, Sunwapta Falls Resort - Jasper, Thompson Hotel & Conference Centre - Kamloops, Best Western Carlton Plaza Hotel - Victoria, and Pacific Palisades Hotel - Vancouver

“Kimpton in name only - skip it”

Having stayed at a Kimpton or two in the past, I booked this hotel based on its reputation and the price that I got through a reservation service. We just left there after a 5 night stay.

I knew we were a little far from the slopes, but at first impression I liked what we saw - the lobby is nice and classy. However, the rooms have no sign of "boutique chic." They're all old and tired decor that's never been updated.

However, upon checking in, I was disappointed with the size of the room. For a ski resort, this room was incredibly small. Add to the fact that there was only one closet and one wardrobe (which only had one drawer) there was no place to put all of our stuff.

While my fiance' used the wardrobe and its one drawer, I piled my stuff on top of the tv cabinet - which held an old 25" tv that had a broken power button. The cable was regular people cable, not hotel cable, so that was actually a plus.

The bathroom was small, but functional - but the showerhead didn't want to spray individual sprays despite asking that it be repaired twice. Another sign of shoddy attention to details was that the switchplate had the switch for the light upside down and the fan rightside up. Very lazy. One of my biggest pet peeves is a lack of a nightlite - no one likes to turn on the lights in the middle of the night.

The couch had a nice small tear in the base of it - apparently from the many dogs that are welcome - although we didn't see many dogs and didn't hear any. I had informed them of a severe cat allergy prior to our arrival and the room didn't show any sign of pet hairs.

However, when we got there, it was "college weekend" as it was MLK day in the US. Despite being open to accepting the kids' money, they had a whole list of "no-no's" posted in the elevator - which included "no partying after 10pm." Nice.

The fake fireplace (which was under the tv) was nice, but a little cheesy.

The bed was horrible. The boxspring was bent in the middle and so our feet was a bit higher than our heads. The pillows (after asking for no feather pillows) were lumpy and uncomfortable. We didn't ask to have our room changed as we didn't notice the bed until after we unpacked and the hotel was sold out with college kids when we got there.

We didn't use the spa, but it looked nice - but very expensive, even for Whistler.

Housekeeping was not the greatest - bed was made, but no dusting or vacuuming seemed to be done everyday.

Despite being on vacation, I had to dial into a 3 hour conference call one morning. The staff allowed me to use the meeting room so as not to wake my fiance'. However, there was no phone in the room, so I had to bring mine from my room, and as this was a 3 hour phone call - no speakerphone anywhere in the hotel.

The only bright spot was the staff. The front desk staff were excellent, friendly and as helpful as can be. We got a late checkout on our last day to get a half day in on the slopes and the meeting room access for the above conference call. Mark - who drives the shuttle to the mountain - was friendly, funny and really knowledgeable about the mountain and where to play. Thanks Mark.

When we return to Whistler, and we will be back, we will try a different hotel option if this hotel doesn't get updated.

“good value for expensive Whistler”

Whistler is expensive. We've stayed at a number of hotels that charge less than $200 per night and been less than enthusiastic. Sometimes the rooms are rundown; sometimes the neighbours are noisy; sometimes the hot tub is X-rated (not good for a family with a child). This time we were booking at the last minute so we accepted a hotel that charged in the mid-200s for a studio (queen + pull out couch) and which would accept our small dog. We were delighted. The rooms are spotless and small but well-laid out. The kitchen is very well kitted out with pots, pans, dishes, cutlery, a micro and a two-burner hotplate. A decent kitchen is especially important in Whistler because rooms aren't the only things that are expensive! The Summit is located a minute away from a large grocery store. We found this end of the village to be quieter than other locations as well. Although it's a bit of a hike to the lifts, there is a shuttle. Finally, the staff were friendly and co-operative. The only mediocre note the hotel struck was with the spa, which was okay, but not outstanding value for the price.

“Dog Hairs?”

Summit Lodge

Oct 2, 2007

WE stayed here for three nights in Sept 2007 and had a room on the second floor overlooking the small pool.
Last year we stayed for two nights at about the same time and as
far as we could tell our room was clean and spotless. This time, on first inspection our room seemed fine, but when we picked up our cases to unpack we noticed several dog hairs attached. The hotel sent someone to vacuum the room while we had gone out,
but as anyone with a dog knows it is hard to completely get rid
of the hairs they leave.
Since last year we had read other reviews so perhaps we were looking closer this year.
Be aware that this is a pet friendly hotel and it may not just be hairs that you have to worry about..
The charge for overnight parking, which we did know about, still
rankles when you have to pay 60$ on departure.
Nothing else to complain about, everything worked and the kitchen was useful.
Still if we ever come to Whistler again we will stay elsewhere.

“Very nice accomdations”

My fiance stayed here on a 2 night trip Sept 14 and 15. We drove a few hours from WA state to get to Whistler, I've been there several times before, but have never stayed at the Summit. I was very impressed by the quality of the rooms, the fact that they allow pets (we should have brought our boxer puppy!), and the cleanliness of the pool/ spa area and room itself. This would be a good place to stay if you were up here in the winter skiing too. We were on the 4th floor. Front desk was also great, very helpful. The location is close in to the village action. The java spa they have there is a must do if you have some extra $. The restaurant was nothing special however, and service there was slow. I HIGHLY recommend the French Creperie across the street for breakfast; that place is a real treat.

One complaint about the Summit is the terrible parking garage, the stalls are simply way too small, even for an average sized car. Does everyone in Whistler drive Smart cars or civics??? You're out of luck if you're driving a truck.

Other than the parking situation, I would recommend a stay at the summit.
