“Special holiday at Cambo Estate”

Cambo House, Cambo Estate

Jun 26, 2007

We had an extremely enjoyable time staying in Mid Cottage on Cambo Estate. We loved the freedom of self catering and stayed 11 days in May 2007. The cottage was very homely and well appointed with all we needed to make our stay relaxing. The staff are so friendly and helpful and Peter and Catherine Erskine are very gracious hosts. Drinks in the drawing room at Cambo House made us feel very special in such an historic home that is beautifully decorated with incredible antiques and such rich family history.
The purpose of our visit was to see our son who lives nearby and after we visited Ireland for a week we returned to Cambo House in early June and stayed two nights in the Blue Room B&B. What an experience! An enormous room in a very private wing of the house that has to be experienced to fully understand how magnificient it really is. My husband and I would certainly return to Cambo Estate whenever we visit Scotland.

What an amazing treasure Cambo was on our trip to Scotland! Incredible old manor house with antiques and old ancestral paintings line the stairs. Very large bedrooms with canopied beds overlooking 1,000 acres of farm land and woods. Fantastic trails to walk along the stone walled streams or to the ocean or golf course or hidden walled gardens. It was amazing. The breakfast was delicious in the elegant dining room. A computer is available for guests as is a washer and dryer. Two big pluses. On the way to St. Andrews, a great location. Wish we could have stayed longer.

Incredible place to stay if you want to experience a manor home of a Duke or Earl. Beautiful grounds with animals, woodland paths to the ocean, gardens, and next to an amazing golf course (Kingbarns). We stayed in the "Blue Room" B&B. A room larger than most living rooms with 12 foot ceilings. Filled with lovely antiques. Large windows with views of the lawn and woods. Newly redone bathroom across the hall. Don't let that bother you. You are in your own private wing of the house- never saw or heard another person in our area for the two days we were there. Its just like having a bath en suite.
The house is absolutely amazing- fabulous enormous rooms with antiques and family portraits. This house could be a movie set but is better because it is real. Great breakfasts in a dining room with tapestry, oil paintings, finished wood table (see photo)
All in all a truly unique and wonderful place to stay. We would go back in an instant. As a matter of fact we are planning a return trip for this spring.
For golfers-I played the "Old Course" at St Andrews- it was a great experience. But the Kingsbarn Course (right next to Cambo) looked breath taking. One of the must beautiful courses I've seen. I didn't have enough time to play it this trip but next time I will.

My husband, 2 children & i just returned from a trip to Scotland. We stayed for 1 night at the Cambo House in 2 of their bed and breakfast rooms. We loved everything about the place! The house is magnificient, the staff super friendly, the rooms lovely and the surroundings devine. We hiked along the sea, my younger son played on the swings and trampoline, we walked in the magnificent gardens and all played ping pong in the game room.

At breakfast, Catherine Erskine came in won a decorating mission and was very pleasant and helpful.

Coming from the States, where we don't have too many houses like the Erskine's, we were enchanted. (My 10 year old said it was a bit scary, but he nonetheless said he'd like to return.) I can definitely see returning in the future and spending a few days.

A country manor estate, the experience of staying off the beaten track, beautiful grounds, incredible location, and an rambling architectural feast.

The Erskine's have opened their home, and I thank them for allowing the rest of us the privilege of being able to experience the manor house life.

Reading the last review, I would like to state that we are also US citizens, a couple traveling by ourselves, and stayed in upper servant's quarters... HUGE! But not daunting. An adventure. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel, go stay in a five star hotel. We give this five stars for being the experience that it is.
