My tour group was booked into the Killarney Avenue Hotel at the last minute. We were originally scheduled to be in the Dromhall Hotel, which didn't please me. This hotel is new, but is decorated with architectural elements from old properties, so it has the carved dark woodwork, the fireplace, the built-in bars, and other features that make it appear to be hundreds of years old. The lobby area is absolutely charming and has a peat fire going in the hearth morning to night. There are people having tea and sandwiches in the sitting areas, and the place seems cheery and social at all hours. Staff is friendly and accomodating and the use of the lobby computer for internet access is free.
The elevators are quite large and move quickly and the stairways are handy and well-decorated as well. The hotel features panelled hardwood doors throughout with boldly figured carpeting and a stylish old-world look. Hallway lighting is activated by a motion sensor, so that when you enter the hall, the lights go on.
The rooms are a bit small, but are furnished well with a pair of Victorian style easy chairs, a nice desk area, flat screen TV, and a comfortable queen-sized bed. Decor is colorful and busy in a Victorian sort of way, but pleasant. Windows open for fresh air. The closet arrangement is great...there are spaces for hanging clothes and shelves for shoes and folded clothing. Lighting is good with brass columnar lamps and good lithographs hang on the walls. The desk offers stationery and the staff does a turn-down service complete with chocolate and a card that details the next day's weather. This hotel also has a safe in the closet.
The bath is small, but well-equipped. the tub has a jacuzzi switch...wonderful amenity after a long day of touring. The greem marble vanity is furnished with Gilgrest & Soames soaps and toiletries and there are multiple mirrors, recessed lighting, and face cloths. Towels are plentiful and the rooms are spotlessly clean.
A pub is on premises as well as a restaurant and there is entertainment on some nights. The restaurant offers a fixed price menu for 60 Euro if I remember correctly...expensive compared to other places in town. The breakfast is good with both a hot and cold buffet. There are fried and scrambled eggs, black and white pudding, Irish bacon, roasted tomatoes, cheeses, crepes, waffles, sausages, fruits, cold meats, and an assortment of breads and pastries. A very fine breakfast is served here.
The location of this hotel is marvelous. Dining, shopping, and tourist attractions are at your convenience. Because of this hotel, Killarney was the star of my ten day trip to Ireland. I'd recommend it to anybody.
