My wife and I just spent three nights at the Hotel Cram - and loved every minute of it.
The walk up of the hotel is great. It is in an old building with a good bit of charm to it. The hotel is finished out with very modern styling, but it remains warm and inviting. The bar on the ground floor was trendy, but never crowded. There is a small (okay, *tiny*) rooftop pool and a wraparound deck with chez lounges. Although the space was limited, it was a nice place to soak up some sun without the crowds of the beach. Plus, there are full bar and food services.
The service we received at the Cram was exceptional. We were warmly greeted, and surprisingly, allowed to check-in at 9:00 a.m. - we fully expected to only check our bag and return at a later time. The front desk was consistently courteous, professional and helpful. Dinner reservations were made on our behalf, and we were even given printed directions to share with the taxi driver. A nice touch.
We found the room comfortable and clean. The size (small to moderate) is pretty standard for a European hotel, but the layout is well planned so that the space is very functional. We never felt crowded. The bathroom is also of good size, complete with waterfall showerhead and bidet. The frosted glass door might cause the shy to shudder, however. The flat panel television was of amazing quality, but the channel selection in English was limited to only BBC World. The local premium beers in the mini bar might have been the deal of the century at only €2.50 (less than the drafts at the hotel bar).
The location is a touch out of the way (about a 5 minute walk from the Universitat subway/bus stop), but is perfectly manageable for the able-bodied guest. You can access any part of the city quickly and cheaply by taxi - a trip to the beach only cost €5 - so the location is only a minor nit and not a serious flaw.
At the front desk's recommendation, we visited a cervezaria (bar) called Flauta for drinks and tapas. It is only a one minute walk from the hotel and the food and atmosphere were fantastic.
So all in all, the Hotel Cram is a great place to stay for a visit to Barcelona. I would stay here again without hesitation and would suggest it to friends. If it were just a touch closer in, I would have given it the full five stars. Instead, I give four since it it not possible to do 4+.
