“Great hotel in working class neighborhood in Venice.”

We selected this hotel based on a Fodor's recommendation and this web site. The hotel was terrific. The building has been recently renovated. We had a very quiet room looking out over the courtyard. There is a market close by and we purchased some food and borrowed a couple of wine glasses from the bar and enjoyed a simple dinner at table on the courtyard. The staff was friendly and helpful, although we didn't use them for recommendations.

The hotel is located in a working class part of Venice. There are some construction companies close by selling building materials and welding pipes. However, the people are nice. We enjoyed eating the neighborhood restaurants, which were very croweded on the weekend. The food was good, but not great. However, we had a chance to mingle with the Venetians and their families. It is a short walk to the Grand Canal and vaporettos which will take you to Rialto or St Mark's plaza. You can also walk along the canal through streets that cater more to the locals than the tourists.

I'm glad we stayed here and I would stay there again, if we return to Venice.

    • Disliked — You have to cross over a bridge with your suitcases if you use the vaporetto to get to the hotel.
    • Tips/Secrets: — Walk out the front of the hotel and go through the new condos to find the supermarket. The wine prices are ubelievable.

“Great Location, beautiful room”

Residenza Cannaregio

Just returned from 2 weeks in Italy with our first stop in Venice. The Residenza Cannaregio is lovely, the room we stayed in on the 2nd floor was a beautiful suite with the bedroom room in the loft area. Room overlooked the garden. The area was perfect, away from the crowds and very near family operated restaurants. Major tourist attractions are only a short walk away. I would definitely recommend this hotel!

“The charming, quiet side of Venice”

Residenza Cannaregio

Venice was the final stop for my husband and I on our three city tour of Italy. We loved it! We decided to spend our first wedding anniversary in Italy and are so glad that we saw Venice and stayed at the Cannaregio. The staff could not have been more friendly or accommodating. In fact, our travel agent mentioned it was our anniversary and we were upgraded to a 2-story loft room overlooking the canal. The room was large, especially for European standards. A bed, small desk and TV are upstairs, with a couch, tv, desk, closet rod, bath and toilet area downstairs Our only minor issue was that my husband is a tall man and the shower "door" only covered about half the shower, so inevitably we had water splash all over the bathroom. Not a huge problem for us, but should be noted for taller/larger guests.

The food was very good and there is a bar with outdoor seating that was quite charming. We *really* liked that the hotel was about as far away from the bustling tourist areas as possible. We recommend investing in the multi-day valparetto passes when you first arrive in Venice. We bought the three day pass and used this form of public transport everywhere. The hotel is a very short walk from the Sant Alvise stop and boats come about every 15 minutes. We took the boats to/from the tourist areas, came back to the hotel, then meandered the streets near the hotel for dinner. There are some nice, welcoming, and tasty restaurants nearby. It is very close to the boat stop for Murano as well, which we really enjoyed and would recommend. For those with children or mobility issues, you may want to consider a hotel closer to the tourist areas. Also, we would recommend getting a water taxi to the airport -- the hotel was helpful in connecting us to 2 other guests who were leaving the same day/time as us, so we were able to share the taxi and cut the expense in half.

Overall, this was a very relaxing and accommodating hotel. We would definitely stay there again and would recommend it to others.

“Extremely well-run, exceptional value”

Residenza Cannaregio

I was prepared not to like this hotel after our hot and tired party of four arrived one afternoon and was told that our rooms had been given away to a tour group. However, the manager we spoke with did everything possible to make amends. We were put up in a nearby five-star hotel for one night and were then moved back to the Residenza for the remaining three nights, where we were given upgraded rooms with sleeping lofts and canal views. There was also a chilled bottle of Prosecco in our room when we made the transfer from one hotel to another. The porters were extremely efficient in transferring our bags.

There are many good reasons to stay here. First, we spent under $300 a night in a very expensive city for hotels. Second, you can see that this place is exceptionally well-run, from the excellent breakfast service to the hustling and gracious porters to the desk clerks who gave us some great restaurant recommendations. Yes, this place is out of the way, but the trick is to get a three-day vaporetto pass for 25 Euros and make full use of that mode of transportation to get back and forth. (A plus is that you're much closer to Murano, Burano and, when you leave, the airport.) Furthermore, it's in a very quiet neighborhood with some good local restaurants, so it's a welcome relief from the crowds at Piazza San Marco and other sites. It also gives you a chance to experience another, less "touristy" side of the city as you mingle with Venetians going about their daily lives.

We would absolutely go back to this hotel. It truly is a gem.

“Excellent value in residential neighborhood”

My wife and I stayed at this hotel prior to a cruise. We were very impressed with the location, service, and quality. We reserved a superior room which was quite large. The bath facility was also quite large for a european hotel.

The hotel is in the residential section of Venice which results in a very quiet setting. It's nice to walk amoung people that actually live in Venice. The location is near good local restaurants and near grocery stores. It is also only 2 blocks and one bridge from the S. Alvise vapparetto stop which makes it very convenient for traveling to the busy and noisy S. Marco area.

The staff were very helpful and made good suggestions for restaurants in the area.

As someone who has lived in Europe and traveled extensively there, I would highly recommend Hotel Cannaregio!
