Frommers' reccommendation of this place made it sound great, so we booked it over the phone (which was difficult, as the staff speaks very minimal english), but were VERY disappointed with our stay. The place is indeed charming, with an outdoor patio, lots of twisting hallways and portuguese tiles lining the stairs - but "charming" can sometimes be a synonym for "old and run down". The character of the place did not make up for the fact that the room was tiny and shabby (there was an actual hole in the glass of the window), the bed ridiculously uncomfortable, and the bathroom (which was down the hall from the room and could only be accessed with a finicky skeleton key - not ideal for use in the middle of the night) had a terrible smell (mold, mildew?) and was infested with spiders and ants.
OH and, even though we'd booked ahead of time, they didn't seem to have our reservation on file, so I guess we were just lucky that they had a vacancy.
