Just arrived back from Luz. We had a great time and are already planning our next trip.
We didnt stay in the Luz Bay Club Hotel , we stayed in a Luz Bay Villa , but we had use of all the facilties of the hotel.
Ignore those negative reports about the building site and noise. Yes they are building apartments next to the hotel and yes they are using cranes, but the noise is kept to a minimum and the building is not related directly to the hotel . We used the pool facilties and were not disturbed at all.
The hotel is very clean and the staff friendly. The only minor downside was the lack of sunbeds around the pools. People were very selfish and 'bagged' their sunbed with a towel and then went of to do other things. The hotel should adopt a policy of removing these unused towels.
Luz is a lovely little village , not yet spoilt by tourism. It has a beautiful , safe beach, awarded with a blue flag. The sea is crystal clear and for those of you that have only visited the med in the past few years, it will come as a surprise to know that you can still swim and snorkel without getting an ear infection!
There are a couple of very nice restuarants, try the 'Conche' on the sea front. They do very good steaks and the house red is to be recommended.
The Bull Pub ( like an english pub from the 1950's) is immaculate. The food is homemade and great quality. You could eat of the floor here , it is so clean. The staff are very welcoming.
The Resturant Fortulesa should be given a miss, especially if you like to eat before midnight. The service is appalling ( we went twice to double check and it didnt get any better)
Chaplins is also to be avoided if you have children that like to eat without waiting for ages. The food here is good but the wait was too long. The Atlantic next door is a much better choice and you will need to book.
Don't bother with the local taxis, whilst there are plenty at night , they are few and far between during the day.
Portugals main roads and motorways are straight, clearly signposted and very easy to use.
Hire a car ( we did and drove abroad for the first time in 30 years) try Sergio at Budget rent a car phone him on 282 76 41 12 and negoitate a rate. We got a A class Mercedes for the price of a Corsa and 4 days for the price of 3.
Once you have your wheels , go up to Bergau (5 mins away ) don't try driving to the front unless you want to get stuck in the narrow cobbled streets of this lovely vilaage. Park at the top of the main street and walk.
Have lunch at the BeachBar . Spend an afternoon here enjoying a bottle of wine an some of the best fish you have ever tasted.
Another place to eat is Dom Sebastion in Lagos old town. Book the terrace for a special evening meal.
By now you should be able to tackle a longer drive , so do try Monchique in the mountains. This spa town is just like Portmerion with the sun.
The end of the world , past Sagres is an absolute must. You cannot go any further west in Europe. The cliffs here are fantastic , but not for the faint hearted. If you are interested in bird watching then here is for you.
We visited far too many hideaway coves to mention, but do be adventurous and drive along the coastal paths, you will find bays to die for.
Our two weeks went far too quickly and we are already planning our next trip to this lovely area.
