Hotels in Lagos are devoid of major chains so the selection available seem to be limited for the budget traveller. The Residencial Solar Hotel was recommended to us in our well know brand of travel guidebook and I have to say it was adequate, but not the best I've been in. We originally arrived by train, and the hotel is blissfully close to the rail station and footbridge leading to it (5 minute walk). The town is small enough that location is not an issue, everything is in walking distance of the major tourist attractions along the promenade. This hotel wasn't our original choice, but walking by we noticed it was mentioned in our travel book and had a nice lady and her daughter running the desk. Why not, we decided. Unfortunately, the lady was never to be seen again, replaced by more surly men later on. Cash only, and room keys must be returned to the front desk when leaving. Note there is no elevator/lift there so beware if you have heavy suitcases. FYI - The staircase/hallways are pitch dark but look for the glowing orange lights, they are timer switches that turn on the lights for you. Unfortunately the dark hallways (until you turn on the lights) and blind corners may make single female travellers wary. The hallways have marble flooring so noisy guests in the hallways will mean for a noisy night...
That said, I thought the hotel room was sufficient. The room/bed was clean, sattelite TV with many channels including English language ones, and a fridge. The room also had a nice balcony opening onto the street below, which also made the room nice and bright. The street is a side street so it doesn't generate too much noise. The bathroom was less impressive - it was cold and perpetually damp due to bad ventilation, as well as dimly lit with a single bulb. The shower was old and the door didn't keep water in very well, but it did produce hot water when wanted. Quite cramped though, the bidet was not needed. Locks are the usual flimsy knob based ones, and not deadbolt (common practice in Europe). Towels are provided but not changed daily. Soap / Shampoo definately not supplied. We had to ask for more toilet paper at the front desk.
My female travelling companion and I differed in opinion on this hotel. For a guy I thought the place was was sufficient. It's not deluxe but just meets your needs for a place to sleep and get clean. She however didn't like it at all, I think she thought it was a little too dingy for her liking and was wary of the staff. Ultimately, I'm not sure what the other hotels are like in central Lagos so it may be unfair to say this is of lesser quality - the lack of modern looking hotels in the central area leads me to believe that they may all be of older vintages. I can't recall what we paid exactly, but it was 40-50 Euro as I recall. Do some research is all I can recommend.
