The funky Hotel Rival makes a great alternative to the bland minimalism of Stockholm's other high-end hotels, and is situated in a pretty good part of town (although in a city this small, every hotel is well-situated), being only a 10 minute walk from the Slussen vantage point and 15 minutes from historic Gamla Stan. Our "deluxe" room was reasonably large and airy, with a nice view into the leafy Maria Torget square. Wood floors, trendy furnishings, large flat screen telly, teddy bear and a giant still of a picnic scene from "Abba: The Movie" hanging over our bed contrived to make a fun and charming room. The gigantic shower and a bath with a window into the bedroom also found favour with us.
Downstairs, the mezzanine cocktail bar is a great place to start/end an evening out. I didn't eat in the bistro, but the food in the café looked decidedly sub-par.
The only negative for me is the a/c issue mentioned by another reviewr below. The room was quite warm for my tastes, and the large number of bars in the neighbourhood means that it is too loud to open a window at night. That said, this is a pretty minor niggle, as I still slept well in the exquisitely comfortable bed (and, for the record, my wife disagrees that the room was too warm).
