We bought a new Volvo C30 and took European delivery, which we highly recommend! It's a blast, and the car (which includes two free tickets to Göteborg) actually costs LESS as the ultimate souvenir of a European vacation than it would if you bought it from the local dealer. Volvo puts you up at the SAS Radisson Scandinavia the first night and we were able to extend an additional night at the Volvo rate ($233 USD) with breakfast included. If you do this, we learned that Volvo also pays for secure parking at the hotel following delivery of your car.
The breakfast buffet is wonderful, pace yourself, but eat hearty as food and drink everywhere else is quite costly. The rooms are compact but very nice. Ours was quiet and overlooked the naturally lighted central courtyard below. The beds are very comfortable with soft down comforters. We slept very well.
The hotel is located in the downtown area and the staff was helpful in getting oriented with free local maps at the desk. Shops, restaurants, etc., currency exchange and the public transport system are a short and easy walk. Good thing too..... since the driving can be a bit confusing in this city even with good directions. Expect to get lost, but expect also that you'll eventually find where you're going without too much trouble.
A couple of tips.... Be sure to hit the currency exchange for cash and some coins. Public toilets generally require about 5 SEK to enter. Also, food and drink are very expensive as others have said. Figure $40 USD for two beers and two good but minuscule tapas. Although if all US restaurants bought all organic and whole grain foods, the price would probably be comparable. So expect good food, but be willing to pay for it. If you're on any kind of budget, or just want to stretch your food dollar, there's a food store in the nearby urban mall with an excellent selection and much more moderate prices.
Next, we're off to Oslo and the beginning of our Scandinavian tour based on the 21 day driving tour in Rick Steves excellent “Europe Through the Back Door” book on Scandinavia. I'm sure it'll be great, though if we had to plan it over again, we might have planned to tour less costly countries with the dollar so far down.
We're liking this approach a lot though. Volvo couldn't have been more thoughtful or hospitable and the car is wonderful. I think there are more Volvo's in our future. Ford should do this at home, though a factory delivery in Dearborn followed by a tour of the Midwestern US somehow just wouldn't be the same.....
