My wife and I spent 10 nights here in mid June 2008. We have no hesitation in recommending this excellent hotel, which deserves its position as No. 1 hotel in Marsalforn.
We were originally a little disappointed with the size of our seaview room, but Mr Muscat the General Manager was totally wonderful to us and arranged an upgrade to the Presidential Suite to make our stay more special! Normally the suite would cost an extra Euros 43 or so per night and, to those of you not on a budget, I would recommend paying this to get the suite with its large airy rooms, jacuzzi bath, twin bathrooms and enormous sun terrace.
As a bit of constructive criticism, we would mention that the cleaning, although very high standard, was not impeccable. We would recommend a little more supervision by a cleaning manager to iron this out. We also suggest a slightly larger fridge in the room so large bottles of cold water can more easily be stored. The sun deck would benefit from sun loungers rather than more chairs.
The food we had at the hotel was universally excellent. One could live for a whole day off just the buffet breakfast! The coffee shop on the ground floor served the best tasting coffee and wonderful cakes and pastries. The only sour note in the cafe was the rather miserable staff and the very slow service when we needed to pay and move on. In fact everyone we saw plus us had to almost harass the staff to get the bill. In the end, we took to going to the cashdesk ourselves and paying there. Other people had to do this too. A little retraining of the cafe staff should solve this.
The rib of beef I had in the rooftop cafe was easily on a par with anything I have ever had in Simpsons in the Strand and special mention must go to Joe the Barman/waiter who was very friendly and looked after us wonderfully.
The location of the Hotel is excellent and ideal for access to the local swimming in the lovely bay of Marsalforn. The rooftop pool is on the small side and one gets the usual cases of visitors reserving sunloungers in advance (despite the hotel policy forbiding this). Nevertheless, the pool is lovely and clean and refreshing and food and drink is served by Joe and his colleagues all day and evening anywhere on the roof.
Although the hotel welcomes kids, we did not see much for them to do except swim and this is more of a hotel for adults, in our opinion. As always, the best recommendation for a good hotel abroad is that the local people stay there and they certainly did at this one.
These guys thoroughly deserve their 4 star rating and if the Presidential Suite had a private pool on its sun terrace I would award it 5 stars with a distinction!
Would we stay there again? Yes, beyond any doubt!
