Hotel Limonaia

Jun 25, 2008

The view is breathtaking and the room is ok. Cleaning is very good.
The watersupply is changing from ok to terrible. Sometimes the hot water simply isn't there, and taking a bath i cold water alone is not funny. We asked the reception to do something about it, but the guy who came up and looked at it just said that everything was ok (it was when he eventually came by) but the hot water disappeared again a few hours later. So check if there's hot water befor using the soap, you might have to wash it off with cold water.
The buffet is not impressive. There's a lot to choose from, but the hot meat is not hot but at best lukewarm. The waiters do their very best and are all quite friendly, but some of them do not understand anything but italian, or if they do, they don't show it.
You can show up for dinner at 6:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. If you show up at 6:45 p.m. they have closed the restaurant, and you cannot get in until 7:30 p.m. even if there is enough room for new guests (some people leave again after a shot time). So we decided to show up af 7:30 p.m. or later every day, since they have to let us in there because it's the late shift, and also if we got in at 8:00 p.m. we were alloved to enter.
Even though the temperature was 29 degrees Celcius they didn't turn on the aircondition, and the aircondition was the very reason for choosing this hotel.
The pro's are not enouh for us to visit this hotel again.

A fantastic location with spectacular views of the lake - probably the best place to stay in Limone - but you do have to be fit and enjoy walking uphill.. which we do.. Infact, we were pleased to walk after enjoying far too much pasta, gelataria, wine and limoncello,

The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The buffet meals were adequate - infact the pasta starters were delicious. The main courses had plenty of vegetables and salad but were not high cuisine. The main problem with a buffet (we found) was that the whole eating experience was over within 45 minutes or so.. but if you want value for money, this is certainly that., We ate out 3 or 4 times in Limone anyway as we wanted to experience the town and atmosphere.

The gym at the hotel was the nicest gym I have ever been to (6 euros per person). It was like having a spa morning. Sparkling twinkly lights in the ceilings of the steam room and jacuzzi type room. Fantastic mutli coloured lights in the showers which shot at you from the top and the sides. There was even a sun bed (which we did use as the weather was not so good during the latter half of our visit). The outside swimming pool was really nice too - a good size and clean and no reserving of sunbeds!

We hired a jeep for a few days from Tombola car rental (which was expensive really and would have been cheaper if we had hired a car for the week at verona airport before we went) but the jeep was good fun.. We went right round the lake and also discovered the spectacular mountain roads - including the road where the James Bond opening sequence for the new movie "Quantam of Solace" has been filmed - due for release November 2008. See this youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGPD6J4kvLk for a view of the road. Stunning and exhilerating.

We had a great holiday and would recommend Limone as your base and this hotel.

“Ok for a cheap deal”

Hotel Limonaia

My wife and I stayed at this hotel from Sat 24-31 May. We are 28 and 26. The staff were very hardworking and tried to do their best. The food was ok although warm UHT for breakfast (yuk) and cheap cereals etc. The room was like a British travelodge room, basic, only CNN and Eurosport in English on TV. The finishing of the rooms was a bit rough and the balcony a little neglected e.g. broken tiles which lets you into the budget of the place. The bits on show to reps. look nice.

We had a lot of noise on our last night until 3.15am in the next bedroom with youngish drunken guests singing and shouting on their balcony and in their room. The noise carries well and lots of people were annoyed. Only one receptionist seemed to be manning the site at night and was a bit scared and had no real authority to sort situation. This was an isolated case as most guests are 50+ and quite laid back.

The 'Wellness suite' is good. Costs 6 euros a day but gym, saunas and steam room are impressive. Two pools as well.

Overall Limone is nice but quite pricey. Other towns are cheaper around Lake Garda if you visit them. Very hilly and not suitable if disabled I would say. Good old SPAR shop for cheap water and food. Tourist information is helpful. Not a lot to do if the weather is bad.

Wouldn't go to Lake Garda again but glad I went once.

“Loved it!”

Hotel Limonaia

We returned from Limone on Saturday after our weeks stay and we loved every minute of it. When we read the reviews after we had booked, we didnt know what to expect, but we knew it was only 3 star accomodation, so didnt expect too much.

In our opinion the bad reviews by people about this hotel are by people that are just too picky. Our room was basic but nice and clean, the food was good and all the staff were always friendly and polite.

The food was what we expected and although was only pasta, the quality was amazing as you would expect in Italy. There was always a good choice of thier version of an english breakfast, fruit, cereal, yoghurts, cheeses and hams, so plenty to choice, and I am very fussy. Same for the evening meal, if you didnt want pasta or pizza then there was meat and salad or potatoes and lots of choice for pudding. We went in Low season but towards the end of the week when more guests arrived, we realised if you want more choice then go to breakfast/dinner at the opening time as it gets busy. If your self catering there is a pizzeria on the groundfloor of the hotel.

There was a keyboard player in the lounge/bar area a few times a week and he isnt great, but tries his best and made us laugh and kept us entertained.

In the Low season the centre of Limone was really quiet in the evening so we decided to stay in the Hotel, but i think it would get nice and lively-ish in the middle of may. All the food was really nice but even though we was half board we ate out in Limone a few times and never had any complaints about the food or the price. If you go on trips into venice however you will realise the cost of food/drink will escalate.

It is only 7 euros each with a discount card to go to Malcesine on the boat and it is well worth it, its a lovely town, lots of winding alleys and shops, and cafes. The hot chocolate and cakes are amazing!

I went with my boyfriend and we are both in Mid 20s and the only thing that we found was that the hill from Limone to the Hotel is a killer, very steep. You have to take deep breaths and have a few pit stops along the way, but the views are worth it. Watch the roads and turn left , then right down the hill across the road into the town, dont go right under the tunnels as the italians are not pedestrian friendly, and the tunnels are dangeous.

If you book this hotel go with an open mind as it is a little dated and rustic, but exactly what i expected in the mountains and would highly reccomend it. There is other hotels lower down the hill and closer to Limone, but they dont benefit from the view/charm that this hotel has.

“Mixed bag”

Hotel Limonaia

I can understand the mixed reviews for this hotel.

On the plus side, it does have fantastic views, especially from the restaurants and bars. Our room was large with a dining table, and a generous balcony also with views onto the lake; it had a safe, all the usual en-suite facilities, a flat screen TV, etc. There's ample car parking (and even the car parks have fantastic views!). There was a good choice at breakfast

However, everything about the hotel felt a bit 'cheap'. The room had everything you need but it didn't feel like a quality room - the TV picture was almost un-watchable, the bench seats with the table were hard and uncomfortable, some bathroom fittings were loose. The views would be much better if the trees were pruned back considerably and the grounds tidied up. The breakfast was bland and there was no feeling of personal service - some staff were friendly, some a bit off-hand. The reception area was a bit '1970s' and the reception staff OK but not impressive - most visitors seem to come on coach tours, our Expedia booking had them flummoxed for a while. The car parking is on an incredibly steep hill and the cars are packed in very tight - most definitely not for the faint hearted!

Overall there was nothing whatsoever wrong with the hotel; it just had that 'pile-it-high-sell-it-cheap' feel about it that you get in cut-price supermarkets.

Would I go there again? I wouldn't rule it out, but I think I would have a good look around at other hotels in the area first.
