“A good base to explore the lake from”

Hotel Royal Village

We stayed for a week at the Royal Village. It's quite a large hotel complex split over several buildings, but never felt too large as a quiet road runs through the middle meaning it seems like a smaller place. There is a corridor under the road linking the two halves so it's quite safe.
The room we had was a usable size - not huge, but not so small you couldn't move around. We had air conditioning, a balcony, a tv, a mini bar and the bed was comfortable. The room was cleaned well daily.
There are several pools scattered around, and the outdoor ones were very busy during the day. The indoor one was much quieter and we tended to use this. A lot of visitors seemed content to stay aroudn the hotel pools all day and never leave, and they were well catered for with free soft drinks and wine all day, with free snacks in the afternoon. We preferred to hire a car and go exploring the lake however. The least enjoyable thing about the hotel was probably meals. They are served "buffet style" and generally it's something of a free-for-all to grab a table and get to the food. Once we worked out the system it wasn't too bad though, and the food was perfectly edible if not to a gourmet standard. Be warned though, I don't think I saw a single chip the whole time!

Lake Garda (and Limone) are beautiful however, and highly recommended. The Royal Village makes a good base although those of a less-fit nature should know the walk back up to the hotel is a bit of a killer. The hotel do run a taxi service for 1 euro from the lakeside during the evening though, so it's not really a problem. To see some pictures from Limone and the surrounding area that we took, visit [--]

“CANNOT FAULT THE ROYAL VILLAGE”

We have just returned from a week at the Royal Village Hotel in Limone , and we cannot recomend it highly enough (booked with Inhgams as a package deal). The outdoor pools were spotless (cleaned every morning) and the food was excellent, we chose the buffet option in the main restaurant. Tinned Fruit?. Yes , there was tinned fruit avaibale(my wife enjoyed it with Yoghurt at Breakfast )but what about the fresh fruit on one table (in bowls of cold water) and the array of cakes and desserts on the main buffet area .The staff were friendly and helpful and the animation team (4 girls) all worked very hard to entertain. The hotel is up a steep hill, but there is a shuttle bus (1 euro).
all in all an excellent choice for families,

Just returned from a lovely holiday staying at this hotel. The food was fantastic, free drinks all day, free wine with meals. The views from the terrace were great. Lovely quiet peaceful place. Fully recommend.

Very good service in bar and dining hall. It was very clean, and the staff were helpful and friendly.

Limone was a beautiful place and worth seeing, and it was a short walk downhill to get to the town, but there was a mini shuttle bus available.

“Possibly the worst place I've ever stayed”

Hotel Royal Village

Sep 12, 2006
8/11 found this review helpful

This hotel is possibly the worst hotel I have ever stayed in and will certainly not be making a return visit. On the plus side Limone is a beautiful place and worth visiting. The hill up to the hotel isnt as bad as folks make out, given Limone is built on a hillside, its all uphill from the lake to most of the hotels, so if your not mobile, you will depend on a shuttle bus.

Back to the hotel. I booked a superior double room with a lakeside view. The website I booked from did not give me the option to add a child under 2, so I guessed I would ask for a child's cot on arrival at the hotel. When I made the request at checkin I was told that the room was too small to put a childs cot into and I should contact the booking company. The managers quote was "Its not our problem, the room is too small, you should have booked for 3". That got me worried given it was a superior room, yet not big enough to add a childs cot. We were told the hotel was fully booked and the room we were assigned was all that was available. We said fine, we'll take the room, the child can always sleep in the double bed with us. The room was very small, but we managed to push the 2 single beds toward one wall to make a 3 foot space between the bed and the sliderobe and convinced the management to add in a child's cot. Note that to get to the room we had to navigate 3 different stairwells - not really conducive to keeping an 8 month old child in a buggy. We eventualy used a fire escape in and out the hotel just to avoid the stairs.

The restaurant:
When you book a four star restaurant, you expect 4 start food. This is certainly not the case and a lot of the food is done on the cheap at the Royal. For breakfast you can expect to have concentrated orange and grapefruit juice served from a press button machine. I would have expected freshly squeezed juice available. Coffee is also served from a similar "push a button" style machine. Push button capachinos and lattes is just not what I expected. At the fresh fruit table, expect to find plenty of freshly opened tinned fruit, tinned pinnapple, tinned pears and tinned fruit cocktail.
Dinner wasnt much better, and expect a range of frozen veg to be served, and one night we ven were lucky to get Smash or the italian equivalent (thats powdered potato, just add water".
The head waiter we found not helpful and when we arrived with a buggy, he told us to leave the buggy outside and he put us in the corner of the restaurant which had very poor access given the seating arrangements. He did provide a high chair for us to use, but it was filthy. It had food from a previous sitting, and the lining of the seat had not been cleaned in a long while. When we went for breakfast the next morning, we refused to use the high chair and when to a part of the restaurant where we could use the buggy to feed our child. The head waiter got quite annoyed when we chose where to sit ourselves. After 2 nights we chose to eat in Limone rather than at the Royal. There are some really good restaurants in Limone and very good value.

The bar:
Expect a long wait at the bar unless your a group of young women that the waiters fancy. The first night we went there, it was a good 15 minutes before a waiter came to serve us, and a further 10 minutes after that before the drinks arrived. The next night, we waited again for 10 minutes before our orders were taken. This time we waited 25 minutes before the drinks arrived. This is not an exaggeration. I had even time to walk to my room and change my childs nappy and come back to the bar and still have a 10 minute wait for the drinks to arrive. We didnt return to the bar after that. Instead we went to bars in Limone where the service was far better.

Overall nothing above is what I would expect from a 4 Star Hotel. I would return to Limone, but never again to The Royal Village

“Great holiday at the Royal”

Just returned from a fantastic time staying at the ROYAL village hotel.
Although up a fairly steep road, (only 10 mins walk) the views are worth it. There is a wee mini coach which goes up and down regularly.Plenty to keep our 9 and 11 year olds entertained with. three outdoor pools (one for very young children) and one indoor. Trampoline, kids club in the shady garden area where the kids had fab water fights , ping pong matches etc.We actually found the food excellent with a huge choice and something for everyone. This is almost an all inclusive hotel although not advertised as such.- free drinks all day , afternoon tea etc.

Only the main part of the hotel appears to have air conditioning but all the rooms seem to have balconies.
Would thoroughly recommend this hotel to families :-)
Worth a visit is Malcesine across the bay- partic on Saturdays when there is a very good market.
