For a quick getaway, my wife and I were looking for smaller, boutique resort with a beautiful beach and lush setting for a relaxing break. This place is it.
First, one of the managers, Samy, picked us up at the airport with cold towels and bottles of ice cold water. When we made a comment on the soothing music CD she was playing, she offered to make us a copy. Which she did.
Upon arrival, we were given a beach-front 2nd floor master suite, even though we had only booked a junior suite. Comfortable king bed, flat screen TV in the separate living room, two bathrooms, and two balconies. One ocean front, the other pool/ocean view.
Every morning we had the complimentary breakfast of rolls & jam/
butter. That was enough for us due to the huge portions at the resort's two restaurants each night.
Every day was spent under one of their beach palm umbrellas. Reading and listening to the surf. The beach at the resort is absolutely gorgeous. It is cleaned of sea grass every morning.
The staff was always friendly and learned your name immediately. Acxel and Anna at the beach were great and always anticipated when we wanted something.
Lunch was burgers & fries on the beach or seated on one of the couches at their ocean front restaurant.
Before we arrived, we had grand plans to go on snorkling trips and visit some of the Riviera Maya tourist sites. But laying on the beach won out every day.
With all these positives, there were some negatives that caused us to withhold the Excellent rating from this wonderful resort.
First, the food. While their two restaurants served good food in large portions, it was not great. My recommendation would be to decrease the portion size and focus more on quality not quantity. John Gray's restaurant a 5-minute cab ride away, got it right. Absolutely amazing food. Incredible goat cheese pizza appetizer and believe it or not, his mac & cheese with shrimp main course was stellar. Their bar served the best Margarita on the coast.
Second, while everyone was very friendly, there seemed to be a different concept many times on what was timely service. Sometimes requests took awhile or never at all.
And finally, the biggest complaint occurred the afternoon we spent in the spa. There was a wedding at the resort that day and the bridal party was getting ready in the salon & spa. The bride and her attendants were going through the women's side of the spa to the common area in the back. So they walked past the spa entrance desk with several employees present there. No problem, except the male wedding photographer with them followed. Right through the women's spa. No spa employee choose to stop him. My wife was inside at the time, just getting out of the shower. After a confrontation in the women's spa, my wife went immediately to the front desk to complain. After continued apologies throughout that day from various management personnel, both male and female, it became obvious that they did not understand the extent of my wife's feeling over having a male stranger see her naked.
So while we feel Ceiba del Mar is a wonderful resort, we feel other American travelers should know that there are some cultural differences to be aware of.
