People who come to the Cabana's (or Puerto Morelos in general) expecting a flashy tourist town will find a lot of reasons to gripe and complain. If you are looking for a REAL vacation- no hype, no flash- just a real town with real people and real experiences, then PM is the place for you. My wife and I came last winter for her 40th birthday over the New Year. We have friends who stay in the town over the holidays every year. You could not ask for a more perfect place to stay. Does it have a huge pool, generic big-chain hotel furniture, bad art prints? No. What the Cabanas has is plenty of space, the biggest shower I've ever seen, a nice quiet main yard area, a big hammock for every room and it's all within walking distance of the town. The manager was a friendly, personable lady who was there daily. The "help" was friendly and always said hello. And this was all while the town was still coming to grips with the hurricane and tremendous damage it inflicted. We will be going back soon (and bringing the kids) and we have every intention of staying at the Cabana's again and again and again...

I had high hopes for this place after reading the other reviews and checking out the rooms on their website. What a dump - if you like 1 or 2 star hotels on your vacation then pick this one, but if you like luxury accommodations then look elsewhere. If you enjoy something simlar to the Westin then this is not the place for you. We hated this place - it had a horrible ant problem they were everywhere - on the sink when brushing your teeth - in your suitcase - on the counter in the so called kitchen. We informed the Manager of the problem and she said, well don't you have any ant spay under your sink? I don't go on vacation to spray for ants! We asked her if she had another room avalalbe and she said no, well maybe Saturday she wasn't sure. Well, we were only staying there for 3 days and I could not have stayed one more day. The three days felt like a week. Another interesting feature of the room was a added noise of a water pump right outside the patio door. Every time someone flushed the toliet or turned on the water the thing roared! It really added to the pleasant experience we were already having. Oh, by the way no air conditioning so we couldn't close the doors for any sort of quiet time. I will say that the grounds were pretty. We were in Cabana 1 - maybe the upstairs rooms are nicer? No, probably still the same decor. Stay away from this place if you enjoy nice accommodations.

My boyfriend and I recently stayed five days at Cabanas Puerto Morelos, and we had a very nice time. We were in a second floor room -- I'd recommend these over the ground floor rooms simply because the ocean view is so great. Each of the top-floor rooms has access to a private rooftop deck (there was a spiral staircase in our room to the roof), and we loved sitting up there with coffee in the morning and a beer in the afternoon. The beach is literally accross the street.

Rooms are spacious, with a small fridge, hotplate, and some essential pots, pans and dishes, and a blender, microwave and coffee maker -- enough to make breakfast or a small meal. Coffee and sugar are provided -- which is TERRIFIC. Staff is very helpful and friendly, and the garden and grounds are very well kept. Other thoughtful ammenities include beach towels and chairs.

Our room (#4) included a smallish double bed (a queen or king would easily fit), and a wicker couch and table. Aside from a hole in one of the screens (which was exploited by some rather large mosquitos), we had no real problems.

For the money, this place is a great deal -- quiet, spacious, and friendly, in an excellent location. If you snorkel, check out the barracudas that hang out about 30 or 40 feet off the beach -- we routinely saw five or six of them!

Access to the top floor is up a wooden sprial staircase, so probably not the best choice for those with limited mobility. It that case, the ground floor rooms also looked to be nice, and each has a nice porch/outdoor sitting area -- you just miss the great ocean view.

Cabanas Puerto Morelos has recently been completely renovated. There are now five units, studio apartments with good cross ventilation. The 3 units on the top floor have ocean views. Decor is lovely, the kitchen well equipped, and the owner was happy to accomodate requests. No phone, no TV and no A/C. It is a short walk to the center of this quiet, peaceful town.
