Cabanas Puerto Morelos has recently been completely renovated. There are now five units, studio apartments with good cross ventilation. The 3 units on the top floor have ocean views. Decor is lovely, the kitchen well equipped, and the owner was happy to accomodate requests. No phone, no TV and no A/C. It is a short walk to the center of this quiet, peaceful town.

My husband and I stayed in Puerto Morelos for a few days at the tail end of our Yucatan vacation along with my sister and a friend. I had found Cabanas Puerto Morelos on an old website and decided to book it in advance based on the good things people had to say about it. We arrived late and were met by Miriam, the sweet and personable owner at the gate. When she let us in I thought there had been some mistake because the place looked about a hundred times better than i had seen on the website i had been looking at. It turns out they've completely renovated the entire place, rooms, pool, everything. It was beautiful, with great landscaping and architectural details. The hotel is a two-story building with three rooms on each floor. The undulating architecute affords each room a good amount of privacy. Our room blew me away, it was huge!! Big, clean, comfortable bed, back terrace, dressing area, bathroom, shower with a glass ceiling, kitchen, and living area with sofa. Spiral stairs led up to our private rooftop lounging area with a superb view of the sea. The town...as far as we could tell only had three main roads...and the hotel was right off the closest one to the beach. The pool was great and the thirty second walk to the beach was well worth it...the water is calm and blue. The town itself far exceeded our expectations too....we spent most our time trying to figure out how to move there permanently!!! The people were all laid back and extremely nice. The town motto seems to be a Bob Marley lyric which is painted on the wall right inside town. There are plenty of restaurants and coffee shops and everyone speaks english...although they also put-up with our broken attempts at spanish. The town is only fifteen minutes from the Cancun airport but it's a world apart. The residents have vetoed the idea of the large resorts and high rises that plague the Mayan Riviera..and have even gone so far as to refuse to dredge the port so the cruise ships can't stop by. A seriously awesome town and an equally awesome hotel.

We stayed at the Cabanas Puerto Morelos during the first 4 nights (end of May 2004) of our birding trip to the Yucatan and we LOVED it so much that we ended our 2 week trip there as well. I can't praise it enough! I hesitate to say too much in order to keep this GEM to myself! Seriously, this is the best kept secret in Puerto Morelos. The room and the grounds are immaculate and very comfortable. The kitchen (and coffee maker!) made our early birding adventures very easy, and the pool was WONDERFUL each afternoon! We had the ENTIRE place to ourselves those first 4 days and that was such a huge treat but even with other guests there during our second stay we still felt quite private. The town is only 4 blocks away and it is quite lovely. Be sure to check out the fishing tourny held late May each year, the town had a fair-like atmosphere. We recommend the Cabanas HIGHLY to our family and friends and anyone else that would prefer to avoid the "glitz" of Cancun or the Mexican Riviera. I think that it is especially perfect for birders with the ammenities and the very reasonable rates. Since we we there OFF-SEASON, we paid off-season rates. I felt very lucky to have stumbled upon their website when planning our trip (check it out!).

Just came back from a fabulous trip to Puerto Morelos. We stayed at the cabanas (in the honeymoon suite) and found the place to be charming, well-run, clean with a delightful Mexican flair. The one bedroom suite was airy, bright, and came with full facilities as represented on their website. Furthermore the owners provided us with coffee, cookies, cereal, sugar, salt and pepper, all the little things that can be nuisance to buy when you're only there for 1-2 weeks. The unit also had a CD player (bring your own CD's) but no TV (but who needs that) with lots of books to choose from. The private courtyard was perfect for lunch and a dip in the tidy pool. Very private even if your neighbours are at home. There are only three units which makes the place feel very homey. The owners live upstairs and are quiet and discreet. Typically of the Yucatan, comfortable seating can be a problem as our unit had wicker furniture and the corner could have used a really good reading lamp. However, we entertained and everyone remarked on roomy, pleasant, comfortable features of our unit. The beach is just across the street and the quiet garden makes it worth the little walk.
