My husband and I spent our honeymoon at El Dorado Royale from June 23-June 30, 2008. This was our second trip to EDR, we were previously there in June 2006, and we loved it so much we decided to go back. Our second trip to EDR was even more amazing than our first.
From the moment we got to the hotel everything was wonderful. We were immediately taken to the private casita check in and given a glass of champagne. We were also informed that we were receiving an upgrade to a swim-up casita for no extra charge, and being given 100 dollars free at the spa for being repeat visitors of the resort. We were told that our room wouldn't be ready for an hour (we arrived at the resort at 11:30am), but we were told that we could eat at JoJo's for lunch and that the room would be ready when we were finished. After lunch we were taken immediately to our room. We stayed in casita 3016. The room was beautiful, and nice and cold...our air conditioning definitely worked!
The casitas are definitely worth the extra money. The first time we were at the resort we stayed in the swim-up jr. suites. They were lovely, but the castias were beyond amazing. Some of the perks of the castitas include: in-room pool towels (you were given 4 new ones 2 times a day...no messing around with towel cards), nightly turn down service (they cleaned your room up, turned down the bed, put on relaxing music, did aromatherapy, and left you chocolate mints), pre-ordering breakfast room service (each night you could leave a card on your door informing room service of your breaskfast order as well as the time you would like it delievered...it was always hot and on time!), and you can make reservations for all the restaurants (no waiting in a line with a buzzer).
The maid service was wonderful. Our maid always left us towel animals, cleaned the jacuzzi tub, left plenty of towels, and made sure everything was in its place. The maid even stopped in again in the afternoon just to check that things were still satisfactory. The mini-bar guy was excellent. His name was Alex. Making friends with him can get you a long way (this includes a bit of a tip), but once we knew him my husband always had corona and negra modello in the fridge (instead of tacate).
There are about 40 castita rooms to each swiming pool and swim up bar. We never had a problem getting a chair by the pool (we didn't go out until 9 or 10 each morning). There were probably never more than 30 people at our pool at any time. Our bartender was Carlos, and he was amazing. He was a great guy to talk to and if you get to know him you will feel like you are friends by the end of the week. He would make you any type of drink, as well as come up with something interesting for you if you didn't know what to order. All you had to do was ask him for a senor or a senorita drink and he would come up with something for you. Oh, and if you ask him "what time is it?" you and everyone else at the bar will be getting a shot of tequila...so watch out!
The restaurants were all amazing. In addition to the breakfast room service we also ate breakfast at La Isal and Cocotal. Both have amazing food. Cocotal has a large buffet, which has everything you could want.
We had lunch at a few different places, however the best place that we found was the little sandwich bar at Castita pool 31. You didn't have to get out of your bathing suits...you didn't even need a towel. They had a great menu of sandwiches, wraps and salads, and if you ask for them they have amazing nachos.
We ate supper at a number of different restaurants. All of the food was great and there was always lots to eat. We didn't try Fuentes or D'Italia. I enjoyed the large menu at cocotal (we ate there twice). We also had supper at JoJos, Fondue, La Isla, and Kampai.
Since we were there on our honeymoon we also had dinner on the beach. It was a great dinner and our waiter was amazing. His name was Pablo, and he made sure that we had everything that we needed. The only thing that was a problem at the beach dinner was the mosquitos. Definitely wear your bug spray, especially if you are wearing a skirt or sandals. Also included in the honeymoon package was champagne (which we drank while enjoyin the jacuzzi), and a free massage lesson (which was fun and relaxing).
Since we had a 100 dollars free at the spa I tried a Thai massage. It was nice and relaxing and the massge therapist was very professional and polite.
At night we often went to the Guacamayas Bar (swing bar). They had a great band, and entertainment (which we usually missed because we got there too late).
All of the staff at the resort were helpful and tried to make our vacation the best it could be. Our concierge, Claudia, was very helpful, and although we were asked about doing the time share talk she didn't bother us about it after we told her that we weren't interested. We could usually find a shuttle to take us from one part of the hotel to the other, but everything is reasonably close anyhow (you can walk from one end to the other in less than 15 minutes). Most of the restaurants took us between 5-8 minutes to walk to and we were staying at the far end of the resort. The carts are all over the hotel, but we never felt like we were going to be run down.
Lastly, we met some great people at the resort...who were basically all celebrating their weddings. Hi to Donna and Joe, Jeff and Liz, Abigail and Tim, John and Theresa, Rob and Jodee, and Megan and Andrew.
This resort is truly amazing. After enjoying two vacations here we know that we will definitely be back for a third. The only thing I can complain about is that we only stayed for a week...it didn't seem long enough.
