“Kevin and Sarah Loved EDR!!!”

My wife and I had an incredible honeymoon from Oct. 21 through Oct. 28 at EDR. It was perfection - we are still suffering withdrawal pains from having to return home to cold Wisconsin!

Here are a few highlights and tips from our stay at EDR - feel free to email (krades@hotmail.com) with any questions - I would be happy to try and answer them.

Navigating through Cancun's airport went okay - a little confusing and lots of guys in blue shirts (stay away from them) are trying to grab your luggage to "help" you. We had a 20 minute van ride to EDR and we greeted with a cold towel and a glass of champaigne. Check in was easy. We had booked a Oceanview Suite, but because it was our honeymoon we asked about upgrading to a Casita. We got to upgrade for only $100 a night and were placed in an awesome single casita (#2618). We were about 7 steps away from the best swim up bar - Papagayos!

Sunday was spent "partying like a rock star" at Papagayos. We met SO MANY GREAT PEOPLE! I was introduced to a "Mexican Flag" by our awesome bartender Abel.

We were spoiled by Hugo on Monday who was always close by bringing drinks, sandwiches, cookies and ice cream! We were also spoiled by the absolutely wonderful food at EDR. I was worried about some of the reviews regarding getting reservations and the food itself, but we had incredible food the entire time we were there!

Tuesday was our first excersion to Xel-Ha and Tulum. We had so much fun at Xel-Ha we opted to stay the whole day and skip Tulum. My wife and I did the "Sea Trek" and Xel-Ha and loved it - you walk on the ocean floor with a "helmet" on for 30 minutes - lots of great fish and stingrays!!! Snorkeling was great as well - lots of fish!!! The only drawback to Xel-Ha is the Lazy River - it is REALLY Lazy - you do not move if you are in a tube! No one told us you could snorkel down the river - we thought you had to float on a tube. Snorkel it - skip the tube. I jumped off the "Cliff of Courage" and got a great picture taken of me in flight!

Wednesday was our candlelight dinner on the beach which was included in our honeymoon package - we upgraded to lobster and had 2/3 of our meal on the beach plus we enjoyed a great saxophone solo at our table. However, it got really windy and a little rainy so our main course was served to us at JoJos. The lobster was very good, but both my wife and I did get sick from the very rich butter and garlic sauce they serve with it - we both needed Immodium that night and the next morning. The food was fine - just very very rich.

We swam with the Dolphins on Thursday - great experience - I would really recommend it. We chose the Aquarium in Cancun because most Dolphin swims involve 8 people and 1 dolphin. We had 5 people and 1 main dolphin plus another who joined us for the free swim. Lots of one on one time with them!

We spent all day on Friday at Papagayos hanging out with our new friends. A BIG HELLO to Bill and Wendy from LA, our 3 UK couples - Steve and Lisa (who should model), Steve and Heather, Dave and Wendy, Don and Teri from Houston, Jordan and Megan from Kansas, Shawn and Liz from Texas, Mert and Nancy (who saved my sunburn with vinegar), Tom and Heather and Beth and her Hubby from St. Louis. It was so great spending a week with you - send us an email anytime!

TIPS:

All the workers at EDR bust their butts! TIP THEM! We took $150 in $1 bills and tipped anyone and everyone that helped us. They do not expect to be tipped, but they really appreciate it!

You do not need to be in a casita to have a great time at EDR. We went back and forth on whether or not to upgrade - we are certainly glad we did (the outdoor shower was awesome) - however - we went inside an Oceanfront suite and they are very very nice.

Watchout for the sun! I go from Casper to Lobster and stupidly thought SPF 45 would work for me - WRONG! I got torched on my shoulders (the only thing out of the water at the swim up bar!) my first day. SPF 60 did the trick for me or reapply a lower sunscreen frequently. Pack vinegar along to help get rid of the burn if you have fair skin (a mixture of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water on a washcloth works great - hold the cloth on your sunburn for 15 minutes). Also, if you go to Xel-Ha (or any other ocean/water park) you need to prepare yourself to spend $16 on "biodegradable sun screen." They will not let you use Coppertone, Hawaian Tropic, etc.... because it ruins the ecosystem underwater.

Do the timeshare. Yes, you read it right. Everyday you will get a little note jammed in your door asking you to do a 90 minute talk at the "Exotic Travel Club." They start by offering you $100 for your time, the next day they raise it to $150 and we finally did it when we got the $200 letter. It was not high pressure at all - very informative and an easy way to get $200. You can use the $$$ for purchases at the gift shops at EDR or you can apply it to your bill.

Internet service will cost you $8 for 30 minutes, $6 for 20 and $4 for 10.

Prepare yourself that things run slower in Mexico - especially dinner. Dinner at EDR (no matter what restaurant you go to) is an event! It will take you anywhere from 1 hour (La Caretta) to over 2 hours (La Fondue). Unlike Applebee's, there is no rush to eat EDR - take your time and enjoy the experience.

Breakfast at Cocotal is a MUST! The buffet they have is incredible - we ate there 5 out of the 7 days! Made to order eggs and French Toast that is addicting!!!

We cannot wait to go back to EDR. It truly was a perfect honeymoon!!!

We were on our honeymoon 23rd to 30th October in a swim up Casita well worth the extra $$ and to enjoy the added luxuries of seperation from the other guests is well worth it. Pay the extra money and Get a casita.

Unlimited room service, Outdoor shower in room, 50 feet from beach, huge down bed.

Unbelievable Honeymoon.

My husband and i just returned from our honeymoon of four nights five days. this resort is absolutely beautiful and romantic but our stay was a bit of a disaster due to my husband getting food poison. i just want to make a few comments that may be of interest...food not all that wonderful, small flea type bugs in room and in food areas, rooms are damp, air condition is loud, walls are thin (can hear everything through them). when i read these reviews i made sure to be aware when we arrived and everything people write is pretty much true. however we did not get botheres by time share stuff. we also couldnt go into cancun or playa because the free shuttle was booked the whole time unless you wanted to pay a private taxi. had lots of doctor/medicine fees just to come home and find out we were misdiagnosed. just beaware and if you have any questions please email me hootgrl@aol.com. i could tell my complete detailed story but dont want to bore you.

After reading previous reviews we were a little nervous about our holiday from 22nd-29th October. However, "perfect" just doesn't describe it enough, so here we go...

Upon arrival (very late for us being brits) we were greeted with a glass of champagne and a cool scented towel. We were then whisked away to the Casita check-in with another couple (Carole and Michael - who if you are reading this we would love to get in touch but have not got your address - please mail us), where we were greeted with another glass of champagne and taken to our room (Casita 2517) for the guided tour. At this point I spotted there were beautiful feather pillows on the bed which I am allergic to, and requested a different pillow. This led to me being shown the pillow menu - yes, you heard it right, pillow menu -which had around 8 different choices of pillows. We made the call and within half an hour our choices turned up, well you had to pick me up of the floor! The casita was beautiful with a large bed, large Jacuzzi, and an indoor and outdoor "love" shower. Our view was incredible not only did we have our own section swim up pool bar but direct access to the sea.

On the whole all the staff were fantastic and couldn't do enough for you, however, we found our concierge to be arrogant and indifferent to our requests. These requests had to be made, as unfortunately all our dinner reservations had to go through him. This appeared to be an issue with English people as our American friends found him amicable -maybe this is associated with them being more open to attending the time share meeting, as we just got a note through our door with no pressure to attend.

Having just slated one person we should say there were some really exceptional people who deserve a mention. Francisco and Firmin, Pericos 2500's pool bar managers were always smiling, made an excellent Lime Margarita and Crazy Monkey, and were more than happy to watch my husband and our American friends Kevin, Lisa, Steven, Melanie Jan and Glyn down a bottle of Don Julio tequila, after which point my husband couldn't see out the evening. By the way if you see Francisco, send our regards and ask him to show you his Salsa moves. Jonathon Ruiz also made our holiday a dream by handling all our pre-holiday queries and special requests.

All of the restaurant staff (tips or no tips) were amazing and the food was excellent. We did not suffer from any booking problems being in the Casita section, but we did chat to people from the other section who did (and had to eat in the same restaurant three nights running). I just do have to mention the Martini Lounge - Chocolate Martinis not on the menu but you have to have one or two.

The grounds were constantly maintained and were immaculate with the occasional Iguana in our path, and no smells from the mangrove swamp (which has largely been killed off by the salt water and the last hurricane). Weather was very hot and sunny apart from two days - when we decided the best bet was to go and shop.

We upgraded our package to include the couples massage on the beach this was well worth the money - 1 hour of pampering including a bottle of champagne. We also had breakfast served to our room on more than one occasion as the menu was vast (and because we could). Around us were three couples celebrating their honeymoons, one couple their 25th wedding anniversary, and another their 10th wedding anniversary - it was very, very romantic and a very relaxing and pampering experience. We have both said we would love to go back, and this is unusual for my husband as he likes to experience different countries and places, and always says "why go to the same place twice when there is a big world out there?". Big thumbs up EDR we have some truly wonderful memories.

“The place for couples!”

El Dorado Royale

We stayed at the El Dorado for our 20th anniversary from Oct 21-28 and it was fantastic! From the staff, to the rooms, the service, the food, etc, it was really great. We stayed in the casitas and would highly recommend this if it is within your budget...it is nice to get the extras although I am sure the other rooms were excellent too.

The only negative thing I can say, if I am really pressed, is that it was not the nicest beach..there are alot of sandbags because of the hurricane last year, but I did not find it to be a big negative. For the tours I would highly recommend the snorkelling tour to Paradise Beach resort and the tour to Xcaret-trust me.. you will not be disappointed....both are well worth the money. This is a romantic spot so I would only recommend this resort for couples. Tipping is not required..I did and they were so appreciative..I did not mind and the service was the best anywhere. Hope you have a great time when you go but beware the people at the airport...just walk on by!
