“I Love This Place”

Chan-Kah Resort Village

I'm very surprised about the negative reviews of this place. I read about this place in a book called "1001 Places to See Before You Die" which was very positive (obviously, if you have to see it before you die). We had a difficult check in due to my absurdly poor Spanish skills and a misunderstanding with my Expedia booking (entirely my fault). Even with this, the staff were very friendly and everything was cleared up the next morning with the manager.

The bungalows are stunning. There are large openable windows with screens and curtains on three sides of the structure and a big covered porch with a table and two rocking chairs. Our bedroom faced a small stream where we saw howler monkeys on our first morning. We were also awakened at 4:30am by these same animals. The bathroom was nice and there is a huge area for your luggage, hanging clothes, etc. The air conditioning was adequate for the incredibly hot weather that we encountered.

The Palenque ruins were the most beautiful that we visited. Just walk out to the road by the hotel and wait for a VW bus or a van on it's way to the site to stop and pick you up. It costs 10 pesos. You have to buy both a ticket to the ruins and a ticket to enter the park. The palace is almost entirely accessible with at least two built courtyards and a tower. Don't miss the tunnel rooms underground. There is no food or water inside the park, but there are tons of vendors right outside the main gate. There is an OK open air restaurant there as well. Also, be warned that the waterfalls at the site and the ruins around them are located at the bottom of a very steep series of stairs. You should go here last because after hiking around the site in the extreme heat, you won't want to climb back up the stairs. There is an exit from the site near the waterfalls that deposits you on the main road near the museum.

The pool at the hotel is amazing, but the shallowest part gets way to warm for my taste. There are waiters around that will bring you beer and peanuts with lime juice. The restaurant is pretty decent, but nothing terribly fancy. The waiters were very friendly and attentive. The only weird thing was that there seemed to be very few people at the hotel. We nearly had the pool and restaurant to ourselves, which was fine by me.

I would definitely stay here again, even though it is expensive. I loved every minute of it.

I traveled with my whole family and stayed at this Hotel. It was a terrible experience. The rooms they gave us looked nothing like the pics on their website. Dirty, noisy... the service was TERRIBLE, there was no one to talk to... in three days the manager never showed up.
My recomendation... stay anywhere in Palenque but here!!!

“Beautiful ruins, nice but not very special resort”

We arrived early in the morning with the night bus from Merida. Got a cab to Chan Kah and we could check in immediately. We picked a bungalow in a quiet corner of the resort. Hard beds, a spider ervery now and then but very quiet, in the middle of "jungle". Giant limestone swimming pool at the resort, very impressive. Expensive and not very good restaurant.
The ruins of Palenque are spectaculair.
Our advice: arrive early in the morning or late in the evening, so you can visit the ruins directly when the gates open and stay no longer than one night in Palenque. There isn't anything else there...
We wouldn't advice Chan-Kah, although you'll have no real complaints (when you stay in a bungalow that is). But you'll be paying far too much for what you get.

“Poor rooms and restaurant but the pool area's great”

We stayed here one night in two bungalows. These were furnished in 70s style, with non-matching florals everywhere, and were not particularly clean (the low point for me was getting into bed to find someone's old chewing gum stuck to the blanket!!); the air-conditioning unit was caked with dust and cobwebs and was ridiculously noisy - you have to choose first between the TV and the aircon as you can't hear the TV if the aircon is on, and then between sleep and aircon as it's too loud for you to get off to sleep. The bathroom is a tiled room with a toilet and showerhead and a curtain between: but at least it was clean. There is also a basin area outside this room, with some simple toiletries available: there are also some candles provided (maybe they get power failure?): my teenage daughter immediately lit these on arrival as she said it would cheer up her room, and she was right, it did!

We had little choice but to eat here as we had arrived late in driving rain. The restaurant was unimpressive: we had a good bottle of red wine at a reasonable price, but the bread was stale, my mixed vegetable salad contained tinned vegetables (I was amazed, as we had just spent several hours being driven through agricultural areas full of produce!) and the hamburger we were served seemed to be the kind of frozen circle of cheap processed meat that used to be popular in the UK in the 70s.

By the time I went to sleep this place was definitely rating 1 out of 5; however the next day, having agreed to pay a 50% surcharge for a late checkout in one of our rooms (again, little choice here as we had an 11pm flight from Villahermosa and wanted somewhere to wash before setting off), we returned here after visiting the ruins and having lunch in town and spent the afternoon in the pool area: this was delightful. The gardens surrounding the pool are very pretty and the pool itself large and reasonably clean. There was a poolside bar which was closed but my husband pushed the buzzer there, not expecting much, and a waiter appeared almost immediately and took our drinks order. We passed a very pleasant three hours and it changed our view of the place - I think certainly if you were travelling with younger children this pool would be a great place to cool them down after the heat of the ruins.

We paid a basic rate of $123 per room, I think, plus the late checkout charge. I thought it was high considering the state of the rooms but from what we saw I don't think there's much alternative locally unless you want much more basic accommodation.

“Convenient but choose the rooms acroos the street!”

We spent 2 days at the hotel when visiting the maya ruins.

The hotel is conveniently located near the archeological site and the pool is beautiful (thoug the water was too warm - not refreshing).

We had asked for a room in the bungalows across the street since the price was much cheaper (700 mexican pesos instead of some 1200) and we were glad we did that. The only downside is that the pool was not as close to our room.

The service was good, while we were there our A/C broke and it was repared within 2 hours.

The rooms are ok, but nothing special and not particularly nice.
