“No A/C in 35 Degree Celcius Weather”

Mercure Grosvenor Hotel Adelaide

May 15, 2008

I don't know if I can actually state that I stayed in this hotel. I checked in in the afternoon and noticed there was no air conditioning despite the 35 degree Celcius outdoor temperature. Checked downstairs and they said they were working on it and should be fixed by the evening. Went for a walk and dinner and came back in the evening; not fixed. Spoke with other customers in the elevator and the a/c was out for several days. Checked again and they said they were trying to contact management but it was the weekend and couldn't fix it until Monday. So, checked out and then dragged my luggage to find another hotel. Ended up having to spend twice as much at a hotel nearby, but at least I could breathe.

Counter check in was not in the least helpful in finding me another hotel or giving me accurate information on when the a/c would be fixed.

I could only recommend this hotel in the winter. Do not stay if during the Summer.

“Sufficient for a quick getaway”

My husband and I stayed at the Grosvenor for 3 nights as a quick getaway to celebrate our 20th Anniversary. We had never been to Adelaide before so we were really happy with the location. It is in the same street as all the beautiful old historical buildings and straight opposite the casino. After reading reviews on this site we were not expecting much and were pleasantly surprised. The room was obviously recently renovated and was fresh and clean and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was beautiful and light. Yes, the room is small and dark and doesn't have a view but, considering it was the first time we had run away without children, we were happy for the peace and quiet. We were fortunate enough to be in Adelaide during the Adelaide festival and were only just across the road from the Persian gardens which had some amazing performances on. The staff at the Grosvenor not only didn't know where this was, but didn't even know that the Adelaide festival was still on so I didn't bother asking them any other questions - we found our own way around. The tram stop is just across the road which is very convenient and is free if you travel around the city limits. We had a hire car in our package and weren't happy that we had to pay $14.50 per night to park at the hotel. All in all this hotel is adequate for an experience like ours where it is more about getting about easily and seeing the sights and being comfortable for the amount of time that you spend at the hotel.

Without doubt the worst hotel I have ever stayed at! Unfortunately I had to stay here again for work due to Adelaide being booked out. The rooms are incredibly small, gloomy and depressing.

I had an issue with bugs in my room that took them a day and a half to clean and then relocate me to another room.

Twice that I have been there they couldn't find my booking, the lift broke down and the check-in/out service was slow.

I hate this place and would never recommend anyone stay there.

“Clean and quiet - go for the peace not for the views”

Stayed overnight with a group of friends in 6 standard rooms (the new renovated wing) on the second and third floors. No views at all but thats not what we were there for anyway - get out and about! Because the rooms all looked into light wells they were peaceful at night. Queen beds were comfortable and the bathrooms were immaculate but quite small. Some rooms were awkwardly shaped with large columns in the middle of them but I guess thats what you get when you stay in a heritage building thats been turned into a hotel. Only complaint is the shower head in my room was old and I got pin pricks instead of a comfortable flow but I guess we've got save water somehow ;-) Staff were really pleasant on check in and out. Also booked well in advance and got a great deal thru Accor Hotels website so for the price I cant complain!!

“Nothing special”

Stayed here for 1 night Jan 08. Check in staff were not friendly and had an indifferent attitude. We had a campervan, and because it did not fit into their carpark, we were first told to park in an adjacent park (which we went to only to find again did not accommodate vehicles beyond standard size!). They then told us to go to some public bus depot some distance away. So I walked to the Hyatt directly opposite-what a difference in attitude!. They could not have been more obliging, and valet parked our van straight away. Then finally to our room at the Grosvenor...Booked through Accor Rewards, so a good rate. However this hotel does not value its loyal customers. We were assigned what (I assume) was one of the worst rooms...very cramped, stale and musty, no aircon (only a fan). View out the window into an outside stairwell. I called reception to ask for another room, which admittedly was provided without fuss (same outlook, but aircon and more space). Again no interest from the staff as to why we wished to change, nor any apology.
Maybe its a case of "you get what you pay for", but that does not excuse the staff attitude towards their customers. Wouldn't recommend this hotel, and will not renew my Accor rewards programme.

Thank you for your post. I have previously addressed these comments within the hotel's guest comment card system and understand that this has been resolved.

There is no excuse for a lack of service and this has been addressed with my reception team. I am pleased also to say that we have increased lobby service including an increase of management time spent in the lobby. I spent three hours with our guests today and was delighted with the positive comments I received.

Our Advantage Plus program indeed does offer the best rates. As a member we aim to always provide superior attention and on arrival on this occasion it could have been better (but is now addressed).

I note that the room you booked was one of our economy rooms. These are recently refurbished compact rooms designed especially for the budget traveller and offer great value for money in a market where rates are getting very expensive.

I hope that you dont cancel your membership as you will miss out on the best rates and a raft of special offers across our network of hotels in all places in Australia and beyond.
