“Perfect location; the rest is pretty good.”

The Churchill

4 of 5 stars
Baltimore, MD
Jul 6, 2008

I have a bias - I really like this location. I visit DC as a tourist on occasional weekends, so there's nothing more convenient than free parking and a short walk down Connecticut Ave to the hotel.

I have had some of the best deals going at the Churchill - on this last trip, I paid $62/night, which with tax and fees came to $150 for Fri/Sat night.

The lobby is small and pleasant, and I find the staff to be very friendly accomodating. They acknowledged that my reservation was pre-paid, and they still gave me my bed preference, and a quiet location. The rooms are like new - flat screen TV, new beds, linens, carpets and furniture. There isn't a safe in the room, but there is a refrigerator.

Bathrooms are a weak spot. When I stayed a few months ago, they ran out of hot water. This time, the temperature in the shower grew hotter and hotter. I wouldn't recommend it for someone with children or older folks with slower reflexes... definitely a scald risk.

BUT - overall, it's clean and comfortable. They have free internet workstations in the lobby. And I can walk anywhere I want to go, with the Dupont metro about a 7 minute stroll away.

I would probably not be amused if I had paid $400/night (but at that rate, I wouldn't be going.....), but I like the place, and would recommend it.

“Old Elegance”

The Churchill

3 of 5 stars
Minneapolis
Jul 2, 2008

First, my suggestion is to get a cab or bus to the hotel. It's a walk uphill from the Dupont Circle station, and it's longer than it appears.
The hotel itself is pleasant enough. The lobby is smaller than a standard hotel lobby, so if there's a lot of people checking in, things go slowly.
I have to echo another traveler's point: the elevators are SLOW and SMALL (think European style). However, there are two of them.
The room itself I got (single king size bed) was larger than a standard hotel room. There's a table against the wall that can serve as the desk, though I should note that the chair is slightly too low which makes long working uncomfortable. There was a small alcove at the other side of the room where a mini-fridge and buffet sat. The TV is a large, flat panel and is very new - nice.
The bathrooms are another story. Mine was about 6 ft by 10 ft and the door didn't completely open - it was blocked by the toilet, which sat directly next to the sink. The shower/tub was okay, but the tiles and grout looks as though they needed to be replaced. Be prepared for a very small bathroom.
One other thing I noticed was that I couldn't set the Thermostat to "Auto On" - either it was on, blowing cool air, or off.

Positives: Great bed, larger than normal room
Negatives: Small bathroom, noises from the hall (LOTS of noises), desk/chair not good for long periods of working, vending/ice machines alternate floors

“Dismall Hotel, bad service”

The Churchill

Jun 17, 2008

The location was good, walkable distance from the Dupont Circle.

Aside from that everything else was unsatisfactory. The bathroom was so tiny that there were no bars or handles to place towels on. There wasn't a suitable place for the toilet paper roll to be stationed on so it was hanging on the wall of the toiletry cabinet, which was about 2 cm away from the actual toilet.

The service at the restaurant on the first floor was so slow (it took an average of 30 minutes to receive an order) that a lot of my colleagues ended up being late for appointments and meetings. My group waited almost an hour for the meal to be served on the first night we arrived. There was only 1 waiter who was serving in the entire restaurant which naturally took forever! And this recurred again and again, night after night, morning after morning.

Some of the staff was very immersed in her/his work that they refused to serve the guests. One female staff who worked at the front desk, when approached by me, without even saying a word, immediately pointed her finger at the doorman, which I interpreted to be utterly rude and offensive. The hotel management obviously does not invest any money, time, or effort on teaching the staff what 'hospitality service' is about. Something like this is understandable if it happend at McDonald's or other fastfood restaurants, but I paid over $400 per night to this hotel.

The hotel management seriously needs to do some thinking about hiring people who've had at least minimum education on 'hospitality and service' instead of hiring the cheapest labor that's out there.

All of my colleagues vowed never to stay at the Churchill ever again.

“Safe, Convenient, Great Service, Affordable”

The Churchill

5 of 5 stars
Seattle, Washington
May 21, 2008

After booking this hotel via Priceline and then reading the reviews I was a little concerned but this has been an all around perfect hotel for me - a single female professional in town for 2 days from the West Coast.

I arrived at about 11pm and they checked me right in with no problem. It isn't a Hilton (across the street) or a Marriot (right next door) but a "boutique hotel" It was an old apartment building that was converted years ago into a hotel and apparently recently remodeled so the rooms are huge but the elevator is tiny. I only paid $95 so I was worried I would get something tiny but my room is on the 3 floor and has 2 queens sized beds, a couch, talbe and chair PLUS this other little room (about 8' by 15' that has a desk, a chest with a fridge and room to spare. I think the book rate is about $150 a night although on the door it says they can charge up to $520 a night. It was well worth the price since other's in the same block cost $350 a nite. It is just a bed afterall.)

The main bedroom has enough room to do yoga and although the actual bathroom is a little small that is because the bath and toilet are in one room and the sink in another which I prefer. I don't know why hotels have tile floors though since they are never as clean as I would like them to be and at first I though my drain was slow until I realized I had to turn a switch on the tub.

It is about five blocks away from Dupont Circle (metro station) but there is a bus stop within a couple of feet of the front door if you need and a ton of cabs lined up all the time. It only cost me $12 from Reagan to get here on the shuttle (I had to go to Brookings and to Congress) so it is perfectly located for me.

Last night after I arrived I walked down to the front desk to ask if they had someplace I could buy some orange juice and they went into the bar and got me a bottle and told the bar tender that it was on the house. I had no problem with the wake up call but the doorman oddly enough didn't seem to know how much it would cost to take a cab to the capital despite repeated attempts to communicate. Someone else told me that I could just walk a few (long six) blocks to dupont where I took the subway instead.

(BTW I would not recommend going to congressional offices in high heels as you will be crippled when you return, since the legislative buildings are not all that close to each other - giant blocks).

There is a drugstore and a grocery store within a few blocks and the neighboord is full of places to eat (over 20 within a few blocks and it seems very very safe even at night. I would stay here before one of the chain hotels in a heartbeat.

“would not stay there again”

The Churchill

May 10, 2008

I and 10 other colleagues stayed at the Churchill for a meeting. Although the hotel is convenient, I would not stay there again.

On Thursday, I nearly was late for my meeting because the was no wake up call. On Friday morning, after complaining about the lack of a wake up call on Thursday, I got two wake up calls.

The lights were out in one of my colleague's rooms the first night and although he asked that they fix the problem or change his room, nothing was done that evening.

Although it was an old hotel, the walls were quite thin-I could hear one of my colleagues practicing his non-amplified guitar.

It was raining Friday morning and their driveway was full, so the bellman parked my car on the street. No one offered to help us with the bags or offered us an umbrella while we loaded our stuff in the car.
