My husband and I spent seven days in D.C. as tourists. We wanted to stay near a metro station; we wanted a king-size bed; we wanted to space to spread out after a day fighting sightseeing middle-schoolers; if breakfast wasn't included, we wanted a kitchen setting to prepare it ourselves. And we wanted a reasonable price.
After three days of online research, I chose the George Washington University Inn, and we weren't disappointed.
We paid $230 per night with a flight/hotel package through Expedia. We had a king suite with an eat-in kitchen, a large sitting area, and a good-size bathroom and bedroom.
The Foggy Bottom metro station was a pleasant two blocks away.
Two blocks in the other direction, the shops at the Watergate offered a Safeway grocery, a CVS pharmacy, a liquor store and several eateries. We bought supplies for breakfast, pastries, late-night snacks and Chinese take-out during our trip.
The pillow-top mattress was very comfortable, and we had no complaints about the maid service.
We got a Washington Post in the morning, and the room had cable with movie channels on TVs in the sitting area and the bedroom so we could relax after some very full days.
After reading traveler reviews I expected the furniture to be a bit worn, and that was OK with us. The corners of the tables were nicked, for example, and one set of closet doors didn't slide easily.
But everything was very clean, and we got the convenient location and space we were looking for without killing our budget.
The front desk handled any requests we made efficiently and courteously.
It is a university neighborhood, but I heard party noise only one night of the seven nights we stayed, and it wasn't awful.
Biggest complaint: There was no vent in the bathroom.
We ate at the Notti Bianci Italian restaurant one night. The food was good and the service fine, but it was overpriced and our waiter was snooty. I guess he preferred to serve Kennedy Center patrons instead of tourists.
