“Cool, but kind of ghetto”

Hotel Rouge - a Kimpton Hotel

Jun 2, 2008

We were supposed to have two double beds. I had even called the hotel and confirmed that our reservation reflected that.

But they gave us a single queen room. And a cot.

The atmosphere of the hotel is kitsch. The location is handy. The FREE coffee every morning is DELICIOUS. The free Washington Post or New York Times is a great service. And there are always hired cars out front, trying to earn extra fares, that give great discounts.

Just don't look too closely. The wallpaper has stains and is hung crooked. The carpet is quite worn. The staff is sort of asleep-at-the-switch. And the decor is starting to look late 90s-ish.

But, did I mention the yummy free coffee? Almost makes it worth it!

    • Disliked — The worn facade and the so-so staff.

“Really enjoyed our stay”

We stayed for 3 nights in the Hotel Rouge over Memorial Weekend and had a great time. The hotel is convenient to many bars and restaurants and within easy walking distance of the White House and other DC attractions.

The rooms themselves are great, very funky with one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. Other good additions are the full size ironing board and iron, nice toiletries in the bathroom and big fluffy towels. My only one complaint is that the red decor and the heavy red curtains do mean that you need the lights on even on a lovely bright day.

We had breakfast each morning in the hotel, which we enjoyed. Maybe we could have bought it cheaper by walking up to Dupont Circle but it was convenient and the unlimited coffee and selection of different teas was great. A nice bonus for guests is the 5-6pm hour during week days when you get free red wine and Red Stripe!

All in all a great stay and certainly a hotel we will stay in again if we visit DC.

“Too So-So, I left a day early...”

Hotel Rouge - a Kimpton Hotel

Washington DC

I only stayed one night at this Kimpton after planning for two. After making a same-day online reservation, the desk couldn't 'find' my reservation or the rate at which I had booked it. After about ten minutes delay, I was into my room, but it was an awkward and disappointing way to start.

Room was huge, bathroom too small. Promised flat-screen wasn't there, just a regular lug of a TV too far away from the bed.

Loved the robes and decor but you do need to know this hotel is a converted apartment building that hasn't had a true overhaul of its systems, so you're stuck with some old fashioned air conditioning and very slow elevators.

All in all, a bit too disappointing to splurge for a second night.

I will say the red wine served during the Wine Hour was superb. It helped ease the 'pain.' :)

I don't think this stay lived up to Kimpton's stated goals for its properties.

“Fun and funky”

Hotel Rouge - a Kimpton Hotel

May 30, 2008

I stayed at this hotel for two nights and had a great time. The location is pretty good - away from the crowds but near enough to the subway that it wasn't too much of a hike each day. It's only a few blocks to the cluster of gay bars on P & 15 and the Whole Foods.

The decor is very 'now', though you can tell the building has seen a few years. Hallways and door frames looked a bit worse for wear in some cases though on the whole it was all good. The room (king deluxe) was spacious and well appointed. Non-plasma TV, CD player (though who thinks to bring discs these days?) and a nice sitting area.

The bathroom was fine - not overly large, but enough. The only thing I worried about was the dresser next to the bathroom in the alcove. It looked great - retro cool, but when I opened the door the first time the whole mass lurched to the side with some loose fittings. I managed to get the door closed and didn't touch it again. BIG plus was the free wifi in the room. Thank you!

I was staying on the second floor right above the bar and worried when I came back the first night that the noise from the party that was in full swing would keep me up. Not to fear - got to my room and didn't hear a sound. That was nice.

Loved the after work snacks and the weekend bloody marys. Would definitely stay here again!

“Great Hotel”

Hotel Rouge - a Kimpton Hotel

Stayed at the Rouge for 4 nights while attending a conference. The hotel is in a great location near Dupont and Logan circles and 3 blocks from the Dupont metro stop which i used for transport from the airport. The hotel is an older building that has be nicely renovated with interesting and somewhat european decor. It does have a hip vibe to the place and a great bar. The staff is very friendly and always speak to you. There are multiple different newspapers available in the am. My only complaints would be the light over the vanity in the bathroom is a very dim fluorescent light that would making putting makeup on a challenge. Overall a great choice for a small boutique hotel in DC!
