The Dusit Thani is an outdated 4-star hotel masquerading as a classy 5-star hotel. It has a dated 70's appearance on the outside (with a facade of stark materials and sharp angles) and Thai traditional style on the inside (with the furniture bearing ornate wood carvings).
The standard rooms make the most of a small space, but the bathroom bears the brunt of this economy. It's tiny compared to other hotels in this class, and the door doesn't even clear the bath rug on the floor. The hand-held shower mount is at waist level, too low to be used as a hands-free shower. (A true 5-star hotel should have a separate bath and shower.) Finally, the toilet uses an inconveniently located push button that requires an inordinate amount of force to push and to hold -- and even then, the toilet doesn't flush completely.
Other omissions include the lack of an iron and ironing board in the room. There's also no ice bucket (although that means that there is probably also no ice machine; I didn't check). On the plus side, the air conditioning is excellent, complimentary bottles of water are replaced daily, and each room has a balcony that offers a 180-degree view of the Bangkok skyline.
My room rate included wired Internet access and breakfast (buffet or table service). The wired Internet service was fast enough, but it logged me out automatically every few hours, even if I was actively using it. The breakfast buffet had a good selection of western and Japanese food, but, surprisingly, no traditional Thai dishes. Some food (such as the sushi) looked old and unappetizing, and on one of my visits, the orange juice dispenser went unfilled during my entire time in the dining room. On another visit, the coffee I was offered never arrived at my table.
The location of the Dusit Thani is unbeatable, with subway and Sky Train connections out front, Lumphini Park across the street, and Patpong around the corner. But given the average quality of the room and the service, the Dusit Thani falls short of what a 5-star luxury hotel experience should be.
