The last time I came to Bangkok, 14 years ago, it was a very different city. Globalization has arrived in a big way, but so too have the underground and overground trains, making zipping about the city a breeze. I was here for 6 days on this occasion, for business, and while this was not the Oriental, it was perfectly adequate and the group that stayed here (12 others) were pleased. The staff were extremely efficient, but this is Southeast Asia - they take this hospitality business seriously.
On the plus side: decent rooms (nothing exciting, but functional), a fantastic spa, a great selection of eating options (even if the italian restaurant was horribly overpriced), a good gym. It's also an easy hotel to get to from the airport. The tour operator in the lower lobby was extremely helpful - she organized a rice-boat dinner down the river for 15 of us for a great deal ...
On the negative: The pool seemed a touch small and sort of dingy. This is not a "holiday" resort - most of the people there were for business - this is a place you use as a base. The bar on the roof is a step back to the 70s - avoid if at all possible.
Overall, a solid property but nothing unique. As I was checking out someone was checking in for the 17th time, on vacation, so clearly different strokes for different folks!
