I stayed at Conrad for 3 nights on my first trip to Bangkok before moving on to Peninsula Bangkok for next 3 nights, both of which are legitimate 5 star hotels. You can see my review on Peninsula on Tripadvisor as well.
1. Room: I stayed at executive floor King room that included high speed internet access and breakfast at the lounge. The room is absolutely to die for. If I were given 436 sqf of space building my own sanctuary, it'll look just like this one. It is a true benchmark in hotel room design. See-thru bathroom has all the latest mothern amenities including invigorating rain shower. Perfect lighting. Pound for pound the best bathroom design considering its size. You can enjoy night views while taking shower. Tropical fruit basket and bottlted water always get refilled before you know it. Bed is somewhat firm, but that is the way I like it the most. Array of room amenities such as business desk, LCD TV, mini bar, closet and sofa are in perfect location for ease of use. What an efficient room design! The designer is Oscar worthy if there is such a thing.
2. Public areas: I did not use the pool but it looked very nice. Spa facility is world class as well. There is no outdoor hotel grounds other than the pool area. It has ambience of true luxury business hotel because of that whereas peninsula is more like a luxury boutique resort. Lobby is nothing fancy but more businesslike again. Backdoor to lobby is an entrance to a shpping mall. Direct access without leaving hotel.
3. Service and Staff: very friendly, great smiles all over, typical Thai hospitality. Limo service with new S-Class Mercedes available on the premises as well as regular taxi.
4. Breakfast buffet at the lounge has good selection. Peninsula tops the chart in this category though.
Budget-minded 5 star hotel seekers in Bangkok should look no further. Conrad is the one! For those who are not budget-minded, there is always Peninsula, Creme de la Creme. I looked into Oriental Hotel for a brief visit and I was not as impressed.
* Tips: 1. Take a city map and business cards (from Concierge) with you as most taxi drivers I met do not know exact location of Conrad. Show him the map and card instead of wasting time explaining in English.
2. If you plan to use internet and eat breakfast at the hotel, go for room upgrade to executive floor.
