We just got back Thursday from Hanoi and wanted to put some kind words for all the wonderful staff that made us feel so welcome at Hanoi Elegance Hotel 2. My sister and I stayed for 2 nights, went to Halong Bay overnight, and returned for another 3 night stay. We contacted them via email in January for rooms and were informed that only superior rooms were available. We booked the superior room, the overnight trip on the Santa Maria Cruiser to Halong Bay, and airport transportation all over email.
The superior room was nice, with two single beds that are bigger than twin sized beds at home or the single beds in Hong Kong. Superior rooms are in the back without a balcony, which actually turned out to be a mixed blessing because it meant we were further from the street noise. On our first stay, we were in 501, which was nice in the morning as we awoke to chirping birds. In 201, however, we heard constant talking and chattering from the street below, so I probably wouldn't recommend 201 to anyone who doesn't want to hear Vietnamese 12-14 hours a day.
I was a bit concerned when I heard that that the Santa Maria Cruiser had raised prices from $77 to $97, but Hanoi Elegance honored the lower quoted rate. And when we asked to where to change money, they insisted that we could get a better rate elsewhere instead of changing money with them. Instead of just giving us a map and pointing us on our way, a staff member walked us to the exchange location. These people were not out to scam money off of their guests.
One weak point was definitely the breakfast. The staff members try their best but they work out of a very small area with what looks to be two burners for made to order breakfasts. We found the portions to be small (more accurately, not American sized). The staff were more than happy to give us however many portions we wanted. We had bowls of pho, which were decent. The scrambled eggs, I will warn you, are made with either condensed or reconstituted milk, so they have a strange sweet taste to them. And their version of toast, since I noticed a lot of guests didn't seem to get it, doesn't brown the toast at all. The Vietnamese don't brown the bread, they only put it in the oven to warm it. If you want your bread browned, you have to say so. I noticed especially at breakfast that some guests were unnecessarily rude and condescending to the hotel staff, which was unfortunate as the entire staff tries so hard to make sure everyone is comfortable and taken care of.
Overall, I would definitely stay here again and would recommend the hotel to anyone traveling to Hanoi. Thank you to the great staff at Hanoi Elegance 2 for facilitating such a great stay for us!
