“Not much to add but here goes...”

Excelsior Hong Kong

I guess I can't add much to what others have written, here is what stood out for me:

I had no choice but to stay here, my work uses this hotel. I was here for two weeks and will return several times this year so it's just as well it's an OK hotel.

Lobby; as someone else said, it's like a bus station, with airline crew check in desk - not really a good look. Fortunately i was upgraded to the Executive floor so I didn't have to put up with that.

Rooms: Decor reminds me of a 1970's Australian country hotel. But the beds are beyond superb, very very comfortable. Bathroom and all in-room amenities were very good standard. Rooms service (e.g. housekeeping) were efficient and faultless. They sent around a form asking for your preferences (e.g., pillows, ice in room, newspaper) and my every need was met.

Exec Club Lounge: very nice, excellent service although limited food variety. Staff here make all the difference; they remember your name and preferences like they have vaults for brains but at the same time are very friendly and pleasant girls. On an exec floor I would have expected free internet access, but that was not to be (see below).

Location: actually I don't like the location much, it's so busy in downtown Causeway bay but if you are there for the shopping it's certainly convenient. There is, as someone else said, a Starbucks about two steps from the side entrance which is the place to go for anything you need, including internet access for $2.50 (AUD) a day versus about $30 a day (AUD) for the hotel rates. Why hotels have not worked out that anyone with half a brain won't pay that for in-house internet is beyond me.

Main gripes: internet access charges are insulting and there is NO POOL. In crowded causeway bay after two weeks I desperately needed somewhere outside to go and sit; I ended up paying to use the pool at other hotels on my days off.

“Good functional rooms despite ‘Bus Stop’ lobby”

Excelsior Hong Kong

May 5, 2008

My review is based on having stayed here over 12 times.

Excellent location in Causeway Bay near shopping and subway.

The unpleasant, noisy, always crowded lobby is frequented by flight crews who have their own check-in desk. Once you get through the lobby, however, the upstairs hallways are quiet and rooms are fairly well soundproofed. Rooms are small but very functional and comfortable, and have all essential amenities. Some have harbor views but that costs extra.

Satellite TV includes CNBC and USA Fox News, but not HBO. Internet, which should be free, is HK$ 130 per day.

The hotel will provide a free Herald Tribune newspaper daily on request.

For meals, avoid the noisy coffee shop which lacks its own room and is crowded into hallways and aisles on the second floor. For breakfast I usually bring in much better coffee and fresh juice at less than half the price from the Starbuck’s immediately next door. An even better Pacific Coffee Company is located 8 mins walk away in Windsor House shopping center. For other meals, the hotel’s room service selection and quality are very good.

Service is efficient but mechanical, as is usual in Hong Kong.

Comparing Excelsior to the other standard business hotel neaby, Park Lane: Park Lane has larger rooms and a much quieter lobby, but Excelsior has much better room service selection and quality. Therefore if given a choice, I’d still prefer Excelsior.

“Overall Great”

I booked this hotel from CXHolidays and was kind of a last minute trip.

Hotel is in a great location and I received an upgrade to Deluxe Horbour View Room on the 12th floor. The room is clean, decor is a bit old style. But I am impressed how clean this old hotel is, the bathroom, the carpet and everything. Bedding is not as great as other Mandarin Oriental for sure, but still a great 4-star hotel quality. The EXpress on the lobby floor has the best egg tart in HK!!

Will stay there again!!

“Clean, friendly hotel in interesting neighborhood”

Hotel is located next to the World Trade Center in a very vibrant neighborhood of restaurants and shopping malls, frequented by locals and travelers. Underground access to the Noon Day Gun, and near Victoria Park. Close to metros and trams.

Staff is friendly and helpful. Good variety of dining options in hotel. The Chinese restaurant was excellent, but expensive. There is a British pub on lower level. Very enjoyable stay.

“Nice Hotel, Terrific Location”

Excelsior Hong Kong

Nice hotel. Terrific location. Very good and friendly service. While it is true the hotel décor is a bit tired, and it is not a fancy hotel, it is well-kept and clean and seemingly well-run. By the way, we don’t agree with most of the criticisms in prior reviews, except for the small/old tv's.

Comfortable beds, nice shower, good air conditioning. The size of our deluxe harbor view room was fine (and larger than many European hotels) and a very nice view. The bathroom and tub/shower were on the smaller side but not tiny.

Service at the desk, front door, restaurant (floor 1, breakfast) and lobby area was very good. The concierge desk was helpful and good, and always had multiple people working. Our longest wait for concierge assistance was a minute or so.

Taxicabs were always available, and the wait, if any, was never longer than a couple of minutes. The hotel is located across a main and busy street from the bay and Noon Day Gun, a minute or so walk from Victoria Park, and near the entrance to the tunnel to Kowloon (thus relatively easy for cabs to and from the airport and Kowloon).

The restaurant/buffet on floor 1 is nice. The breakfast buffet is terrific and large, with views of the bay. it was about U.S. $25, including the 10% service charge, . The coffee/muffin/fruit café by the elevators is handy. Starbucks is steps away out the side door, on the ground floor of the adjacent World Trade Center. Dickens pub, downstairs, is nice.

The hotel is adjacent to a bustling and bright (and large) shopping and restaurant area. This busy area is steps away out the side door and towards the back of the hotel. The World Trade Center is next to the hotel and literally steps away. The World Trade Center has floors of nice shops and good restaurants. We ate at good Vietnamese (Rice Paper about floor 4) and Korean BBQ (maybe floor 12) restaurants.

The MTR/Causeway Bay is a few minutes away, on Hennessy near the Sojo department store. Times Square, the very nice multi-story shopping mall, is a 5-10 minute walk away. It has very good restaurants in the top floors.

We purchased inexpensive cell phones (368HK) and local SIM cards at one of the many telephone stores on Yee Wo street (a couple blocks from the hotel). Very handy for keeping in touch with our group and friends. Useable on other foreign trips, with the purchase of a local SIM card.

We were in Hong Kong for a week for the rugby 7’s. We would stay at this hotel again, primarily because of the location and friendly and good service. Our two prior stays were at the more expensive Shangri-La (which is a great hotel, but in our view, not as good of a location). If you want a fancy hotel, don't stay here. If you want a good hotel with a terrrific location, consider this one.
