Tibet Hotel seems to have received very negative reviews. However -- one must be realistic and take some of the criticism with a grain of salt. First the location -- it is located several kilometres from the centre of Lhasa. However, a taxi to anywhere in Lhasa is a fixed rate of 10 yuan -- and there are lots of taxis. And it's an interesting trip to the centre of town...Secondly the heat -- the hotel was unheated -- in December. But our room had large south-facing windows which warmed the room considerably in the afternoon, and the hotel provided us with a space heater if we wanted more heat. Breakfast was somewhat like that in a British b&b in the 1960's (e.g., sausage, bacon, toast, etc. -- a grease overload), but when the dining room staff noticed that we didn't like that much, they substituted fresh fruit (in Lhasa in December!) and pastries without our even having to ask! The toilet in the bathroom required patience and manipulation -- it finally broke down -- but during our four nights in the hotel, we managed to keep it going -- barely. The hot water gave out one evening, but was quickly restored when we questioned what was going on. And the staff -- dressed in winter clothing -- as were we in the dining room -- were concerned and solicitous -- under the circumstances -- with about a half dozen guests in the place; so we were quite satisfied.
