“Great Location but let down by service”

Inkaterra Machu Picchu

Jul 7, 2008

We stayed here in August 2007 as a family trip - 2 kids aged 11 and 7. Firstly the setting is stunning in lush cloud forest. We were collected from the train and the organisation was very good. Our luggage was collected at the station and taken straight to the room. The hotel is an easy 5 minute walk from the station. Check in was easy. Our room was basic - 2 large beds a nice shower room and that was it. As we were not there to spend time in the room then that was not an issue. The bar area was comfortable. Breakfast was OK.Now for the problems. We were not given any information on what to do etc on checking in despite asking. The kids therefore missed the chance to see the speckled bears as we only found out that we could see them when checking out ! Too late. It would be helpful if this information was there in the room or at check in. We did manage to go on a wildlife walk which was enjoyable. Next problem - dinner. On both nights we were unable to eat in the main restaurant and were 'relegated' to the cafe over the railway lines ( the kids thought it was great crossing railway lines to get to dinner - try that in the UK!) The hotel did not seem busy and I wonder if it was because we had children. Nothing wrong with the cafe except service was slow and because the place was quiet it lacked any atmosphere. The patio heaters were not working and despite the best efforts of the staff who could not be faulted it was very cold on both nights. Needless to say meals were rushed due to the cold. If it wasn't for these 2 points then the hotel would be excellent. The setting is fantastic. The organisation in collecting and then taking luggage to the train isvery good. Macchu Picchu is everything you expect and more.

Wished we'd had more time than the twelve hours we had here. I did take the birding tour the only morning we were there. Loved the hummingbirds! The dinner and breakfast we had were very good. Staff was most helpful about holding luggage and getting it from and back to the train.

“Excellent Experience under Adverse Conditions”

Inkaterra Machu Picchu

My husband and two children had the pleasure of staying at this hotel for one night on June 10, 2008. My excellent experience began with the online reservations process and prompt, knowledgeable and courteous responses of their booking agent Ms. Natalie Noriega. I must have emailed her 10 times in a week with numerous and specific questions regarding our room, the guided tour etc and she always answered promptly which is very much appreciated.

We booked a suite for the 4 of us (my kids are 10 and under so we could all stay in one room). We were met at the train station where our luggage was tagged and brought to our room, while we were escorted by another hotel representative to the property, about a 5 minute walk. We were shown to the lobby and began the checkin process with a glass of cold organic tea grown on the property and wet towels to freshen up. I was hooked right there! Our room was not ready yet (it was only 10:00 am) so we confirmed our tour guide arrangements for Machu Picchu and went to the lobby bar for a snack before the tour. This private guided tour was included in our hotel rate (which was not cheap but in the end worth every penny). The bus tickets and MP entrance tickets had already been purchased which was nice because it seemed a little confusing to have to buy your bus tickets at one spot and then your MP entrance tickets at another location. Anyway, a guide walked us over to the bus and rode up to the entrance with us answering questions and pointing out highlights along the switchback road. We were then introduced and handed off to Ernesto, our english speaking guide. We had a great tour of the citadel which lasted 3 hours. He was very knowledgeable. At about 2:00 it started to pour rain and after Ernesto gave us a healthy snack and more wet towels with which to freshen up we got back on the bus to check in to our room. We were taken to Room #48 where our luggage was waiting. This room was stunning! A very spacious room with two double beds, a table and chairs, a couch in front of the fire place, two other club style chairs, an outdoor shower, large outdoor heated soaking tub and a daybed on the patio. It was very secluded and quiet. The bathroom was large and beautiful with a glass door that led out to the outdoor shower. They also had two adult and two child sized light cotton robes for us to use. And they had a gift of a inkaterra walking stick and a water bottle each for the kids. And all of this was before the drama began.

First we noticed a leak in the skylight of our bathroom. I called housekeeping and they had about 7 guys on the situation in a matter of 10 minutes, including the assistant manager (Marco or Marcus) to assess the situation and offer apologies. None needed as we were exhausted from our tour of MP and were just happy to be resting in front of the crackling fire while it poured rain outside. The kids didn't care either, they hung out on the covered daybed outside anyway.

We went down to the lobby around 4:00 for tea and when we came back there was a note from the hotel and two t-shirts from the gift shop apologizing for the inconvenience of the bathroom roof leak.

Then at 6:00 ish the electricity went out and basically stayed out for the next 16 hours!!!! The staff kept our wood pile stocked with wood so we could keep the fire going and brought more candles to light the room. They must have had some sort of generator because there was outside path lighting and the restaurants were able to serve dinner although everything including eating reading the menu was done by candlelight. I had a pasta dish with veggies and it was excellent.

this was a wonderful experience and even an adventure with all the rain and electrical outage. I should note that while I am polite, I am kind of high maintenance when it comes to hotels (I notice everything from sheet thread count to towel thickness to ameneties and beyond) so for me to be gushing about a hotel experience is unusual. I have been privileged to stay in several 5 star hotels around the globe and the staff of this hotel managed to totally impress me even while the electricity was out for most of our stay. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

After 4 days on the Inca Trail it was such a relief to book into the hotel, have a shower and relax.
Every aspect of this hotel was great. Lovely comfortable rooms, fantastic gardens and excellent meals & service. Little extras like tea time and Pisco hour were nice.
I would say this is the best place to stay in Aguas Calientes.
One night was not enough time to enjoy all this hotel has to offer.

“Wish we could have stayed longer!”

What a great place! I read the reviews on Trip Advisor and was not let down. The property is beautiful and the meals wonderful (included in the room price). I had the best dinner in years here.

We spent several hours one day walking through the grounds before our train departure back to Cusco. It was great. The only problem, which we also encountered at Machu Picchu, were the little gnats or no-see-ums. Use a good bug spray!!! I was wearing shorts, no bug spray and ended up with 117 bites on my legs. You don't feel them bite you, but later on they start to itch. I figure if I connect all the dots on my legs, I can tell folks I got myself a new tattoo.

Machu Picchu and the Inkaterra were definitely the hightlights of our visit to Peru.

I was going to post photos, but the person who left the review before mine posted some great ones already. Maybe I'll add a few later after I look at all of them again.

    • Disliked — Gnats or no-see-ums. This shouldn't prevent anyone from staying here howerver. Use bug spray, then ENJOY!
