We’ve all seen those shows where they kick someone out of their dingy apartment, and over the next 48 hours they give it a major facelift using a lot of imagination, some nifty handiwork, and a somewhat limited budget. That’s what this hotel is.
The bed was very comfortable, the linens and towels very nice. The décor was colorful, - my room, # 303, looked exactly like the picture on their website. It was spacious and reasonably well equipped, with a fridge and safe. Plenty of nice touches included the range of L’Occitaine bathroom supplies and a number snacks in the “honor bar”. Free wireless internet is a big plus for me, and they even have a PC in the lobby for guest use.
However, for all these upgrades, it’s still undeniably a former cheap motel in a neighborhood that had me somewhat nervous when I was searching for some, any, form of retail establishment to get some food. Maybe I just walked in the wrong direction, but it seemed a strange place to build a hotel.
Other comments: They have a chauffer service, but it doesn’t pick up from the airport so that taxi cost me $30 plus tip. They told me over the phone that they would be able to take me to my downtown meeting in the morning, but it turned out my 9am meeting was “too early”, so I needed another taxi for that. The restaurant was closed due to flooding, … but I see it’s been like this a long time. Shame as it would have saved me cruising the neighborhood on foot, and when I booked through Hotwire I was thinking (for 3.5* !) I’d end up with a nice bar/restaurant to hang out at in the evening. Breakfast in the lobby was down to crumbs by the time I came down.
On the plus side, the front desk staff was pleasant and did I mention free wireless internet? Finally, I’m impressed that the management is willing to brave these review sites.
… and I did enjoy my stay and slept very well.
I wish the owners luck, we need more imagination and color these days.
Whether it’s for you or not depends upon what you’re looking for, and some (including myself) do get directed here unfortunately without a full disclosure of this “boutique-type” establishment, …little wonder one ends up with negative reviews.
Ps, you need a new favicon – unless you’re using it to promote the Jupiter Hotel in Portland

Thank you very much for your review - I like when people give a fair and thorough review like this, so that I can correct issues before they affect future guests.
1) Yes, originally we had a very limited budget, but the new guest rooms (Executive Rooms) are only a few months old, represent 1/2 of the property, and are equipped with 42" TVs with built-in Digital Video Recorders, new granite bathrooms, and all sorts of nice amenities. The room you stayed in, the standard room, will be upgraded with additional artwork and new 42" LCD HDTV televisions in a matter of weeks.
2) This property actually was both a Hilton and a Radisson at one time, then became an independent hotel. We've never been a motel - that would require the rooms to open up directly to parking spaces, and 1/2 of our rooms open directly to the pool and the other 1/2 have interior corridor walkways.
3) The neighborhood is part of midtown/downtown Phoenix, and is close to many parks, museums, offices, and sports/cultural venues. There are about a dozen restaurants within walking distance and if it's during shuttle hours we will drive you there and pick you up.
4) Chauffeur service - during the summer months we're a lot slower, so the hours of operation for the service were reduced. Starting September and lasting until the end of May, the hours of service will be greatly expanded. The city will not allow us to pick up passengers (they require us to use the hotel shuttle lanes for pick ups, and the permit process takes forever), but we're slowly making progress. The good news is that there's a direct bus for $1.25 and our new Metro system opens in about 12 months, with two stations right by the hotel and a stop at the Airport! In the meantime, we'll gladly drop you off at the airport, free of charge.
5) Breakfast service - we just increased our orders for the continental breakfast and will have a greater selection of foods - including cereals, fruits, yogurts, etc., etc... starting September 1st.
6) Restaurant/Bar - we're excited to announce September 4th as the re-opening date for the restaurant/bar, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, and open until 2am every night. We're also opening (soon!) an additional dining option called C4 at The Clarendon, that will feature traditional sushi as well as other asian-fusion cuisine with a southwestern touch - and it will be incredibly affordable!
Thanks for the compliments on the staff - we try our best to have the friendliest, most genuine staff without the attitude of other hotels... and yes, we're definitely willing to brave these sites - I think it's incredibly important to pay attention to what everyone thinks about The Clarendon. It's my passion and I really care a lot about what people think.
Just remember, we're always interested in doing whatever necessary to ensure that you enjoy your stay at The Clarendon... I'll bend over backwards to make sure that we remain one of the most highly rated hotel properties in the Valley!
Ah yes, and those beds are amazing. They're the same as used in a very-high-end hotel chain... we spent about 4 times as much money per bed than the average hotel does... and trust me, after sleeping here one night, you can tell.
Sincerely,
Ben Bethel
