I decided to try Cabarete this year...just for a different trip.I'm slowly returning to my Saskatchewan lifestyle after a super month at the Casa Blanca. I had arranged for Puerto Plata airport pickup through William and Dorothy at the Casa Blanca. They sent Jose who was polite and a great driver. Though I'd been to Sosua twice before, the way the traffic is in the Dominican Republic always makes me glad to know there's someone else driving.US$35/one way to the hotel.
Dorothy and William couldn't do enough to make my stay comfortable and thoroughly enjoyable. They were always giving me names of restaurants and directions to places in town. Janet's market is so close...it meant being able to buy just what I needed for a day or so. Then go back and buy more when those were gone. If only we could learn to live like that back home!
The hotel is a short walk past some great little restaurants to have an icy cold Presidente or something to eat. Easter time meant closed beaches due to high waves along the north shore...so being a block back from the beach can be a good thing!
I was in Studio B, ground floor with patio door access to a wonderful tropical garden, but also on the other side, a door with direct access to the pool. It was a peaceful place to be...away from the main part of town, but easy access to everything. It had a two burner propane cooktop, a good sized fridge to keep my yogurt, fruit, juices, beer, a sink, two twin sized beds, big space for hanging clothes, ceiling fan,(don't really need A/C as the Cabarete breezes blow through),bathroom with sink, toilet and big shower. Outside my door to the pool was a table and chairs to sit out and eat or read. Lots of chairs supplied by the most wonderful, well kept, clean pool. Even though the beautiful beach is closeby, just floating in the pool was one of my favourite places to be at the end of a day..
I met some truly great people from all over Canada and the US...some there to help in the villages.
I will definitely return to the Casa Blanca...can't quite imagine going anywhere else to stay. Dorothy and William seem like family now. Next time, I think I'll just take one of the rooms with a fridge, no cooktop. It seemed pretty hot to be cooking and for eating out breakfast and supper once in awhile, I'd be hard pressed to spend $20. The DR is definitely my idea of paradise on a budget. The rum is so reasonable to buy and have your own happy hours...or head to many restaurants for half-priced appetizers..two for one drinks. The Dominican people are friendly, hard working....many of our service people here at home could certainly learn from them. They never bring your bill to you till you ask for it...at home here, it seems many restaurants bring your bill while you're still eating the main course. very laid back atmosphere.
I hope this bit of information will get you to contact William and Dorothy for your next stay in Cabarete. Cabarete is a beautiful town.....no beach like it!
