“Acceptable hotel when travelling through California”

Best Western Heritage Inn

4 of 5 stars
Menlo Park CA
Mar 25, 2008

I stayed at this hotel for three nights over Easter weekend. I had a room on the first floor of the hotel, near the office with a king sized bed. The room was clean and spacious. It had an overhead fan, a work desk, cable tv and small refridgerator. The bathroom was also clean, the towels were decent (not thin and worn) and the shower worked well (it also has the curved shower curtain rod that gives you a bit more room in the shower).

We didn't use the ac or the heating so I can't say how well that worked but the overhead fan worked nicely.

The king sized bed was nice. It had nice linens and modern looking comforter/spread. There were lots of pillows and they were comfortable.

The free wireless internet was very slow so I don't recommend relying on this feature if you intend to do a lot of work or download pictures.

The hotel offers free breakfast in the office but I didn't take advantage of it so I can't comment. I also can't comment on the pool cleanliness (or otherwise).

This hotel is near several gas stations and fast food restaurants. It is still about 15 miles from Bakersfield.

The hotel is very close to the I-5. I use ear plugs and slept soundly but others might find it loud.

My best friend and I were driving from Arizona to Washington, and on the 2nd night of our trip, decided to stay the night here, since we were travelling with 3 young children, and they were getting tired and cranky. We chose this hotel because of it's easy access off of I-5, and neither of us knew really where we were, so finding I-5 easily the next morning was very important. It looked ok from the outside, nothing special...but it did look clean. A lot cleaner than the one across the street from it. It was somewhat expensive, about 100 dollars, but we figured that was ok since there WERE 2 adults and 3 children. However, once we got to the room, I noticed right away that it was NOT a very clean room.
I work in the hotel industry as a front desk clerk, and I have for 2 years, so I have grown very picky when it comes to where I will stay, and I can spot problems immediately. There was grease on the table upon entering, a hair in the bed, the floor had not been vaccuumed, there was standing water in the bottom of the refrigerator, not to mention that the inside surfaces were sticky as well, there was also hair on the bathroom floor and in the bathtub, and the air conditioner was VERY noisy. We asked the front desk lady for some extra pillows and a crib for the baby, and she only brought one pillow, saying they were out of pillows. That struck me as kind of odd....I know our facility always has about 20 extra pillows, and not that many people ask for extra. The next morning, I called the front desk to ask her to bring up some extra towels, and she somewhat rudely informed me that I needed to come to the front desk to get towels myself. That is NOT service. I ALWAYS have and always will bring my guests towels AS SOON as I am able to. We ate breakfast in our room, which consisted of bagels, muffins and cereal, and left promptly. I would not stay here again. The next night, we stayed at a Best Western in Eugene, Or., and THAT was a fantastic hotel.

I choose this hotel because it was right off I 5. The room was clean and smelled fresh.
The worst was the pool it was flithy, when i asked the owner when it was last cleaned he stated it is claened on monday and thrusday, well it was saturday a.m and there was no way this was cleaned two days ago. So long story short if you need a place just to lay your head for $71.00 a night aaa rate then stay. If u have kids and they want to use the pool like mine did check out the pool before u book in.

We were coming down I-5 and had the BW book, so we began to call as we were getting tired. The rate ($72 2 queen beds with hi speed internet) was fine and about average for the area. NOTE…THIS IS NOT IN BAKERSFIELD

Like the other review said, it was easy to find off the freeway, very empty with lots of parking. I did like that I was able to get a 1st floor room with parking right outside the room door.

Room was very clean and smelled fresh TV was great (many channels).

The front desk staff is not very caring, however and as owners they should be

Continental breakfast was too basic as if they were required to toss you a roll.

Well I just relocated from So Cal to Oregon, I drove up the 5N with my cat. I stayed at 7 different hotels. All ranging from 2-4 stars/approx $70-$200 per room. This Bakersfield hotel was the worst room on my trip. My room cost $96.26 total...including $10 cat fee. It was easy to find off the freeway, very empty with lots of parking. I did like that I was able to get a 1st floor room with parking right outside the room door. The shower water pressure was the very best of all the hotels on my stay. Check-in/out was pretty quick. The room itself was dark and kinda ugly. The tv got only 3 channels...CNN, the Weather Channel, and one HBO. That is it! Although the hotel was empty and quiet overall, housekeeping was very loud and would yell from the ground up to the 2nd floor housekeepers...my cat HATED that! The hotel does appear to be family owned, and I got a bad vibe from one of the older men. Not friendly, no smile, just kind of stood there watching me as I went to check out...luckily I was checking out. As a single young woman traveling alone, I did not feel good about the way this man stared at me in such an unwelcoming way. Also the only food around is an IHOP and a Jack in the box. I would definately NOT stay here again.
