“What a shame!!”

Read and believe!! The consensus is that this small hotel COULD be good but isn't. Oh how I wish we had checked out TripAdvisor before we booked. The awful smell is still there....causing an allergic reaction after a hour or so....and like other visitors we couldn't figure out WHAT could have caused it. The hotel charges for everything....WiFi, the little cocktail hour they invite you to (unless you check your room literature, you wouldn't know that costs $14 per person), the no-frills continental breakfast (again $14 per person) and the parking...$24 a day. Actually the latter is not bad if you walk into BH to eat & shop because parking there would cost you anyway. The shower is just as tiny and hard to maneuver around as described elsewhere. The linens every night were frayed & beginning to tear & worst of all....the ceiling smoke alarm had been removed & not replaced. Plus there's very little room to store clothing & bathroom sundries. Ah well...chalk it up to live & learn.

“Room, no service”

What a disappointment. Maison 140 should be a gem of a hotel, and might be, if the staff gave a hoot about their guests. The location is good, the decor is interesting and hip without being over the top. But the rest.....sigh. When we checked in we asked about wifi and were informed that it was available for a fee -- which I find annoying since even Best Westerns and Courtyard Marriotts now offer it for free - but worse - they charged but it wasn't working very well...or maybe at all. No apology, just a vague statement, sort of a "dude, we have that, but, like, it hasn't really been working..." Then we got to our room (after squashing ourselves and luggage into a phonebooth sized elevator, which is OK, as long as you can fit, but our keys didn't work. Now, these were real keys, not card keys, so it was odd. We went and got the kid from the front desk who established that yes, our keys truly did not work, then he got a jumbo ring of keys and tried each until he found one that got us in. Again, no apology.
Night one we were awakened by a loud chat on the street below our window. Not their fault, but the question is, why could we hear it so clearly. Our windows were closed. The participants weren't yelling, but they might have well have been sitting on our bed. Night two was worse. The people in the room above were bowling. Well, that's what it sounded like. From 3:00 AM on we heard stomping and dragging and scraping and loud loud chat. We finally called the front desk and asked them to do something. By about 5:00 the noise subsided. It began again around 6:30. At that point we gave up, got up, went to Starbucks for coffee and began packing. When we checked out around 8:00, the clerk asked how we had enjoyed our stay and we told her that it had been generally loud and unpleasant. She seemed a bit surprised but again, offered no apologies or even expressions of dimay that she had unhappy guests. She said that next time maybe we'd be better off in a room facing away from the street and when told that there would be no next time (in a very polite manner) gave us an equivalent of "whatever..."
Ugh. Stay away.

“Nice hotel but inexperienced staff”

Maison 140

Apr 3, 2008

Maison 140 is clearly designed as a boudoir experience with an excessive luxurious experience. While the decor is good, the quality of the furniture is poor when examined closer. The interior is actually fairly standard Californian architecture and the black paint is clearly intended to hide this. It certainly is true to the spirit of LA for its veneer of luxury that is quite superficial.
My room had a missing remote control and blown bulbs. The staff were inexperienced: the concierge knew nothing of the area (not knowing opening times, places to eat, etc), and the cleaning staff kept trying to enter the room at 8.30am.
The pricing of the hotel is also rather excessive with all sorts of hidden charges considering that other boutique hotels in the area have better amenities (eg: free wireless, plasma screens, free parking).
Nonetheless, I would recommend this hotel for its location.

“1 of a Kind, but not for everyone....”

Maison 140

The hotel is definitely one of a kind but is not for the average traveler going to LA to stay at a huge mega fancy pants hotel. Maison 140 is a sleek, dark, seductive hotel that has always meet and surpased all of my expectations. The hotel really reminds me of my european travels, where you find a small group of staff that is always there when you need them. The bar is small, but they have REAL bartenders, not like other hotel bars where they shove a drink at you and charge you an arm and a leg.

*TRAVELERS BEWARE*

The rooms are small, but intimate and have a feel of belonging to the Beverly Hills atmosphere.

Just like a small european hotel you will hear a bit of noise through the walls and the floor boards in the hallway will creek. As a well traveled individual I truly enjoy these minor characteristics that I think an average traveler might feel are flaws. The hotel is unique, original, and pure.

The Maison 140 hosts for traveliers that have an acquired taste.. its like a hip, seductive, Los Angeles version of a bed & breakfast that serves Cheese and Wine instead!!!

“Moldy youth hostel at best!”

The building is old and stuffy and it smells like feet in the rooms and hallway! What a waste of money! The only good thing about this wanna-be boutique hotel is the location... I would never stay there again.
