“Cozy Get-away”

Little Sur Inn

5 of 5 stars
Thousand Oaks, CA
Jan 4, 2008

Such a cozy little place with great ocean views. We were in the front, facing the ocean, corner view with two views of the ocean (I believe room 22) in Moonstone Beach. Cambria is a hop away. The balcony was great, and the most private one we could tell from all the other surrounding hotels. The room was very spacious with a sitting area and eating area, and the fireplace was a great romantic touch that we actually used because it was chilly. Bed was comfortable with tons of pillows. There is also a mini fridge and coffee maker. The morning and afternoon snack/meals were simple, and tasty. The quality of the foods was excellent. If you don't get a room with a balcony, they have a garden patio eating area with a fountain that bubbles. The patio area was so quaint and relaxing I chose to be cold just to sit out there. The blue jays are very used to people and they stood on my little bistro table just one foot away waiting for me to leave my food unattended. The staff is friendly. The long and lazy boardwalk is steps away, following the ocean and leading up to trails. The chipmunks on the boardwalk are feisty. Great little weekender!!

“Perfect for a Relaxing Getaway...”

Little Sur Inn

4 of 5 stars
Sherman Oaks, CA
Dec 22, 2007

My husband and I were planning a three-day getaway to Cambria and were debating where to stay. I looked on Trip Advisor and saw this was a reasonably popular and well-priced option (and I don't know why the heck it's classified as a Bed and Breakfast when it is so clearly NOT). Little Sur Inn is a lovely, elegant, and peaceful retreat on Moonstone Beach, more like a petite hotel or upscale motel that must have undergone an extensive, recent remodel. Our room (upstairs, with a very "partial" ocean view) was surprisingly large and comfortable, attractively furnished, and SO FREAKIN' CLEAN I could barely believe it. Not one molecule of dirt or anything suspicious anywhere. My only complaint about the room was the bed -- a bit soft for my taste.

There's a pleasant open patio for the serve-it-yourself breakfast, which in itself isn't special (pastry, fruit, yogurt, cereal, etc. - nothing hot). Or, you can eat in the small comfy lobby if it's chilly outside. There is also an afternoon snack of veggies, dips, crackers, cheese, etc. that is very nice to come "home" to after a hard day of shopping and sight-seeing. And Hershey's and other chocolates always seemed to be available in large bowls. ( Also, the LA Times and a few other metropolitan dailies were available each morning, which is a nice touch.)

In retrospect, it was minor, but there was one negative to this place. The "morning lady" was surly, unfriendly, and glared at us when we came in a mere 20 minutes before breakfast was due to end. We'd hoped for someone more welcoming, but perhaps she's not a morning person. Still, in the hospitality biz, you hope for someone who at least PRETENDS they are glad to see you!

Also, once when we returned from a long day in town (only 10 minutes away), we noticed that the door to our room was not shut. Nothing was missing and there was no problem, but it was a bit unnerving. Note that perhaps due to the humidity or the remodel, you really have to make sure the doors latch properly when you shut them. Since housekeeping must have made this mistake, we let the front desk know.

With the exception of the morning lady, it was a very pleasant experience. Great location across from the beach, and next to a seafood restaurant that was so popular, we could never get in (plus it's closed Tuesdays). If you want a cozy place to dine w/ a lot of history and great food and service, we recommend Brambles. And if you are into antiques or older collectibles of any sort, Antiques on Main is The Place!

“A Great Little Find”

Little Sur Inn

4 of 5 stars
Northern California
Dec 2, 2007

Tried to book during Thanksgiving week, but the direct website said there was a 2 night minimum. I booked a single night through Expedia or Orbitz without a problem.

There are lots of hotels/motels on this stretch of beach in Cambria. It is very beautiful here, so it's no wonder. I did not find the area to be overcrowded, although it could be in the summertime.

The Little Sur Inn was a delightful place. There was a light afternoon snack and a continental style breakfast in the morning. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were slightly larger than a normal hotel room.

If you are into exercise, there is a great boardwalk right out the door that goes for about a mile along the coast. Lots of folks running and walking out there.

My only advice is to make sure you book a room in the "upstairs" section. There are about 5 rooms downstairs, and the noise from above can be disturbing. Also, the window of these rooms look right out at parking lot level.

The town of Cambria seems to be very quaint. I can imaging this is what Carmel must have been like before turning into a tourist trap. I wish we had more time to walk around this charming town and try out some of the restaurants.

“A lovable place at an affordable price”

Little Sur Inn

I stayed at the Little Sur Inn for a night, having booked a room 15 days in advance and paying 128 $ (tax included, continental breakfast included).
The hotel is just along the Moonstone Beach Drive, not in the town centre but a few feet from the seashore. A couple of nice and good restaurants are in the premises of the hotel and their kitchens stay open until 10pm.

There is a not-attended private parking just outside the building. Only 4 or 5 of the about 20 rooms of the hotel - more costly than mine – have a view of the ocean.

My room - and I suppose all ones - had very clean and new carpets and high-quality furniture: two wooden queen beds covered by white, clean bedspreads; a round table with four padded chairs; a little fridge and a coffee-machine, a chest of drawers, a built-in wardrobe with an iron and a board. To set the room temperature I intuitively used the wonderful fireplace (all rooms have one). The bathroom with marble tiles was wide and very clean, and the quality of bath supplies excellent.
The only drawback I found is due to the fact that the room was in the basement and there was not enough privacy without closing the roller curtains.

The continental breakfast was good, even though I had to clear the table by myself (this is different from the European standard). The lady at the front-desk very helpful and nice and I spent no more than a minute for the check-in and the check-out.
