My husband and I were planning a three-day getaway to Cambria and were debating where to stay. I looked on Trip Advisor and saw this was a reasonably popular and well-priced option (and I don't know why the heck it's classified as a Bed and Breakfast when it is so clearly NOT). Little Sur Inn is a lovely, elegant, and peaceful retreat on Moonstone Beach, more like a petite hotel or upscale motel that must have undergone an extensive, recent remodel. Our room (upstairs, with a very "partial" ocean view) was surprisingly large and comfortable, attractively furnished, and SO FREAKIN' CLEAN I could barely believe it. Not one molecule of dirt or anything suspicious anywhere. My only complaint about the room was the bed -- a bit soft for my taste.
There's a pleasant open patio for the serve-it-yourself breakfast, which in itself isn't special (pastry, fruit, yogurt, cereal, etc. - nothing hot). Or, you can eat in the small comfy lobby if it's chilly outside. There is also an afternoon snack of veggies, dips, crackers, cheese, etc. that is very nice to come "home" to after a hard day of shopping and sight-seeing. And Hershey's and other chocolates always seemed to be available in large bowls. ( Also, the LA Times and a few other metropolitan dailies were available each morning, which is a nice touch.)
In retrospect, it was minor, but there was one negative to this place. The "morning lady" was surly, unfriendly, and glared at us when we came in a mere 20 minutes before breakfast was due to end. We'd hoped for someone more welcoming, but perhaps she's not a morning person. Still, in the hospitality biz, you hope for someone who at least PRETENDS they are glad to see you!
Also, once when we returned from a long day in town (only 10 minutes away), we noticed that the door to our room was not shut. Nothing was missing and there was no problem, but it was a bit unnerving. Note that perhaps due to the humidity or the remodel, you really have to make sure the doors latch properly when you shut them. Since housekeeping must have made this mistake, we let the front desk know.
With the exception of the morning lady, it was a very pleasant experience. Great location across from the beach, and next to a seafood restaurant that was so popular, we could never get in (plus it's closed Tuesdays). If you want a cozy place to dine w/ a lot of history and great food and service, we recommend Brambles. And if you are into antiques or older collectibles of any sort, Antiques on Main is The Place!
