I recently headed to San Diego for Comic-Con with my boyfriend and my cousin. This is probably the busiest convention weekend of the year - 130K people descend on San Diego for this annual comic convention.
After an unfortunate mix up with Wyndham Vacation rentals through which I thought I was going to get free lodging for 2 nights at the Ramada downtown, I *luckily* was able to find availability at the La Quinta Chula Vista - I looked at *a lot* of other hotels and there was no availability anywhere else (this was about a month before the convention). I had been warned by other reviews about Chula Vista and by a SD resident, but given that every single hotel was sold out in the Downtown area, I didn't have much choice. My assessment: if you are on a budget and not high maintenance and have a car to get to SD, this place really isn't all that bad.
The pluses: The bathroom was clean, the internet is free (WiFi), free HBO, check in was very quick (less than 10 mins), parking is free, and the free continental breakfast was outstanding (make your own waffles from a waffle maker, yoplait yogurt, coffee, juice, fresh fruit, English muffins, instant oatmeal, 3 cereals), even rice and miso soup. The packaged bagels looked uninteresting, but everything else was just fine. Don't forget, it's included in your rate and all you can eat! Oh, and it just so happened that the Italian women's volley ball team was staying there, so I have to admit, that was a treat for the eyes for some of the guests! (imagine about 20 6' very athletic women in very short shorts speaking Italian while eating breakfast with you)
The minuses: Chula Vista is not at all interesting from Bonita Rd (where the motel is - if there is a more "upscale" section, it isn't right near the motel. It is about 25 mins or so from the Convention Center - we luckily did not hit bad traffic. The motel is on the freeway, like most La Quintas, so you hear freeway traffic when you open your door or sit by the pool - but when the door is closed, it is very quiet actually. The shower dripped all night and the towels and toilet paper are very "economical" quality.
I won't lie, when I walked into our room, I got online to try to see if by any miracle, there had been a cancelation downtown or in Old Town or even La Jolla, but there were only something like 3 hotels w/ availability in the whole SD area in Expedia and rooms were starting at $500 a night.
The bottom line: This place just isn't very interesting, but given a) that it was Comic-Con weekend and I had no other choice b) it was only $130 per night (average) c) it was clean d) the breakfast was more than adequate, I really can't complain about it. If you have ever been to a La Quinta, you probably know the drill - no frills, but not scary either, so really not that bad if you are on a budget. If you have a choice, Old Town is way more interesting and there is a La Quinta in Old Town that got good reviews on this website.
Tip = When I first tried to get on the Internet, the wireless network wasn't detected. I re-booted and it worked right away.
