The collection, building itself, views from various terraces are all outstanding. The building is in the round, and has outside stairs, which afford terrific (and very high) views over LA, smog notwithstanding the view is great. Collection is varied, best things seemed to be Renaissance paintings and general decorative arts. Have not been to the recently renovated outpost in Malibu that houses the antiquities collection. Some of the mostly Roman antiquities were in the main bldg while Malibu was being renovated, and was little I saw of it was terrific. You do not need a reservation and do not pay anything, if you are by chance coming in on foot or from a bus (a public bus stops right outside the entrance.) The only charge is for parking your car, which was $7 when I was there in 2005. Extremely crowded in mid-day mid-week August 2005; thus, the only drawback was finding a place in the shade to have a (very overpriced) drink or snack. I had to drink my (brought in) bottled water while sitting outside the entrance.
