We're preparing to pack up and leave our secret garden at The Garden Cottage, and it's very hard to go. This is Shangri La in Los Angeles. There are three accommodations, two in the house and our charming and separate garden cottage.
The B&B sits on a lovely residential street in the Miracle Mile district just a couple of blocks from the restaurants on 3rd. By car, it's about a half hour's drive from LAX.
Gracious hostess Ahuva takes you through the locked garden door into an eden of beautiful plants and trees, fragrant flowers and musical fountains. At night, Italian lights glow in the little garden nooks to light your way to the cottage door.
The private cottage is charming and more like home than the typical, studied B&B. Your lovely full breakfast of organic ingredients is served at the four-place kitchen table overlooking the garden. The full kitchen has everything you would need to set up housekeeping. There are fresh coffee beans in the freezer and a little grinder in the cabinet for early risers.
The sitting room has a settee and two chairs, built-in bookcases with family and film photos and a library of VHS tapes (that's right, no DVDs). There is a computer station with free Internet access.
The bathroom is spacious and the shower easily will hold two people. Amenities are not the little hotel-sized ones.
The queen-size bed in the airy bedroom is one of the best we've ever slept on anywhere, and the window overlooks the garden. There is a full-sized closet and built-in dresser. The TV and VCR face the bed for those who want to watch Jay Leno at night.
There are fresh-cut flowers everywhere. In the afternoon, Ahuva brings you a full bottle of wine with artisanal cheeses, fruit and melba toasts.
We paid $189 per night including taxes, and it was a great bargain. We stay in B&Bs frequently and wish that they could all be like this one. We should keep this secret garden a secret.
