I got a great rate on my room using Orbitz.com and taking advantage of a coupon code. I got this room for fairly cheap for 3 nights, so in no way was I expecting perfection. I just wanted what they advertised, which was a clean room on the beach.
We show up, and check in, and before entering the room, my family all went down to the water to walk on the beach. About 30 minutes later we start hauling luggage into the room. Room doesn't look bad at first sight.
Once we get everything in, my sister goes to use the bathroom, and the toilet was dirty. By dirty I mean dried urine and fecal matter on the toilet. We tried to scrub it off and it wouldn't even budge. The pictured included are AFTER scrubbing with soap and a paper towel.
Seeing this, we then looked around the room and noticed it didn't seem to have been vacuumed in a while, and the sheets had a couple of stains on them.
I'll let the picks of the fridge do the talking as I have no idea what that is in there and frankly I don’t care to know. Pure filth!
Disgusted, I call Orbitz since they are who I paid for thus transaction. They try to call the hotel to see if I can switch rooms. The hotel doesn't answer. Orbitz has a special emergency (after hours) number for this hotel that they try and no one answers either.
I check the office and lights are out. So I had Orbitz check a few rates for me for other nearby hotels, but I ended up going to another hotel and having to shell out almost $300 for a new room. At this point we were tired and after driving close to 16 hours we just took the first thing we saw. I had the guy from the new hotel (Sun Viking Lodge) let me look at this room before we paid and it was fine.
We had a decent time there and when I got home I tried to take care of this and get my money back for the first hotel, plus I thought the hotel should cover the new hotel's bill, as it was nothing I could control. If they had answered the phone, I would have gladly considered a new room had I been able to inspect it first.
This is where the real trouble starts. I call Orbitz again and have them to bat for me. To their credit, they did try. They contacted the hotel and the hotel wanted proof I left so I faxed them the new bill, and also e-mailed the photos to Orbitz. I figured since the hotel wanted proof that they were going to help me...........they refunded me $15 and some change! They also charged my card themselves even thought it was a pre-paid reservation through Orbitz. They refunded all but $12 of the new charge, and then an extra $15.00 and told me they wouldn't give a full refund because I didn't let them know I was leaving. Well I tried!
I faxed letters to the hotel multiple times and they never got back in touch with me. They even ignored Orbitz's continued request for them to refund my costs for the new hotel.
In the end, Orbitz gave me some vouchers to use on a future booking, but I am still out time and money.
I was going to try to take them to small claims court, but that means I would have to drive another 15-16 hours each way and I didn't have the time to do this.
I have included pictures of this fiasco.
