I will start with this is my seventh stay at this property. It was previously a Hilton and was awesome. It changed to a Westin late in 2006. I was last there a few weeks into the change. This was my first "real" visit to the Westin version of this property. What a decline !! The service is half as good as before. They don't really do anything wrong, but nothing extra, certainly not first rate. (Example, a restaurant employee who had waited on us twice before, asked us if we were checking in on our third day! Hello, there were only about 50 guests, you should have a clue who they are!! They used to call you by name by your second day there. One bartender constantly disappeared from the pool bar, never came around to ask if you wanted drinks and never picked up empty cups. LAZY!)
Even if you put your maid service sign out, they don't get to your cottage until late, like 3:30pm. There were tiny bugs in the kitchen and master bath (first time) and the staff acted like it was my fault because I had food in the kitchen. Ummm, isn't that where most people put food??? I've never had a bug problem at Sunset Key before (and I've always had food in the kitchen), I don't know if this is the exception, but I expect they aren't keeping up with a pest program.
The biggest disappointment was the food. In the past, the food was to die for, whatever you ordered was the most incredible thing you ever ate--this time the food was very AVERAGE, like what you would get at Chili's for six times the price !! One dinner meal was so salty, I couldn't eat it. Speaking of salt--
The pool is now a salt pool and it was way too SALTY. We have a salt pool at home that is appropriately maintained weekly. They aren't keeping theirs up right.
The property is still quiet and relaxing and they have resurfaced the tennis courts.
If you've never been there, you will probably still like it, but beware, the food is a big negative. If you visited when it was a Hilton, you will be VERY disappointed how much worse the food and service have become.
