On checking in at the Colonial House we were informed that we were expected to tip the staff because, they said, the staff aren't paid enough to live on if they don't receive tips. Well, it's hardly the fault of the staff if they don't earn enough, so make sure that you add $20 a night to the room rate as you'll need to tip at breakfast and dinner and leave something for the person making up your room. On checking out I was even asked whether I had "paid all my tips".

The building has charm, but this makes it all the more tragic that it has been allowed to grow so shabby and dirty. The pool area absolutely stinks. The innkeeper is eccentric and affable but it's a shame that his affability doesn't stretch to providing his guests with anything other than the most uninspired breakfast imaginable. Our room was spacious, but shabby and peculiar smelling. The plumbing was noisy and the lavatory needed gentle coaxing to stop the cistern running once it was filled. The view from the window was obscured by a huge plastic air-conditioner that looked as if it has served time as an extractor fan above a deep-fat frier.

I have to say that I've stayed in worse places (albeit in Eastern Europe) but since there are many competitively-priced hotels on Cape Cod you'd do well to give this place a miss.

“Not as bad as some of the reviews suggest!”

Having read the reviews after booking we were very apprehensive. On arrival I have to admit the Colonial Inn does look quite shabby and run down however it is not as bad it first appears. The rooms were comfortable and clean, admitably the furniture has seen better days. Breakfast was definately a disappointment but dinner was ok, if a little lacking in choice (we stayed a week). The best thing about the Inn was the staff, the Landlord was very welcoming and very helpful , the waiting staff were excellent, very cheerful and friendly.

“Total Disaster”

The Colonial House Inn

We stayed here because it was a convenient location and seemed like a good deal with dinner and breakfast for two included. However, we could not be more mistaken. The only thing positive we can say about this place is that they were consistent - consistently bad. However, the proprietors and wait staff were friendly and hospitable. The room was tastelessly decorated with leftovers from a yard sale. The mattress was so soft and lumpy, we seriously contemplated sleeping on the floor. The towels were like paper, and some of them were torn. The toilet seat belonged in the dump. We dared not go into the pool as the water looked very unhealthy. Dinner was enough to make you lose your appetite. The salad was dead, and the entrees were unappetizing, (better food could be had at McDonald's). Obviously, we chose not to take a chance on dessert, which we would have to pay for. Breakfast was equally disappointing. The food was served on dirty and worn dishes. The orange juice was the cheapest that money could buy and the fruit salad was canned and mushy. Overall, this was a big disappointment. How can they run a place like this with good conscience and expect people to return?

“Horror mold-ridden”

The Colonial House Inn

The first room was so moldy that I could not breathe. The next one where I slept was not much better. The bed was lumpy and the toilet barely flushed. No shampoo in the dispenser. The breakfast was awful: transparent coffee and canned fruit; stale bread and margarine; no eggs, cereal, or fresh anything. Never ate the dinner: too frightened.
What a dump! To be avoided.

We stayed at the colonial inn for 2 nights. We were told that we will
be provided breakfast and dinner which would be included in the room charge per night. The breakfast was BAD- canned fruits, old muffins and a bowl of cereal with tea and coffee. No oatmeal, no eggs etc. The cutlery looked so dirty and stained. Also, the latest we could come for dinner was 7.15 pm!!!!!!! Now how bad can that get? They very well know that tourists go out sight seeing and no way can they get back by that time. The dinner was tasteless. The place was not clean, everything there had a strange smell. Even the linen on the beds smelt! Yuk.....So please do not go there ever and waste your money and leave with a bad memory.
