We took a trip to Biloxi to see what kind of damage the hurricane had done a couple years back + gamble. The coastline along the gulf which was lined by historic stately southern homes is unfortunately GONE. Nothing really left as far as the old homes go. No hotels remained. A few new small hotels had rebuilt. Many new fancy type condo's are going up as well. It will be different, but Biloxi will be back.
The casinos have rebuilt, or in the case of Beau Rivage renovated since the damage from Katrina. The layout of the Beau Rivage Casino was the same I remember it from a few years back. There were some nice new additions to their restaurants. The excellent buffet in the center of the casino remains, and the food selection and quality remained very good. Service always was very friendly as well as efficient in the buffet. We also tried Coast, a sports bar type restaurant. It, too was pretty good. Service was a bit spotty, but we had an excellent Sirloin Steak special that included choice of potato - both were cooked perfect and a great value for the price. I believe, Coast doubles as a live music night club later in the evenings. There is a BBQ restaurant as well called Memphis B's. While I didn't eat here I tried a BBQ Sandwich thru the Room Service Menu which came from their kitchen and was very tasty. Other high end restaurants include Olives, BR Prime and Jia... we invested our money in some gaming rather than try the last three. I'm sure they are even more impressive than the casual restaurants we tried. Several bars are also available outside the restaurants, I had a drink at the Breeze Bar which is located in the middle of the busy casino. Very modern & chic in decor, similar to the new bars in Vegas hotels the drink price was reasonable and service friendly. Video Poker lines the bar, and comfortable seating around the bar (think Caesar's Shadow Bar)
That leads me to the rooms at Beau Rivage. Large in size, and nice amenities and comfortable beds await you. I had a city view room on the 22nd floor which offered good views of the intercoastal waterways, downtown Biloxi, the other large casino's such as IP where in view too. The other side of the hallway has Ocean View Rooms that are also large and nicely appointed. Views on the ocean side are out of large interestingly shaped windows and you feel like you floating on water. The city view rooms are a bit noisy. From the 22nd Floor room I was in, you can count on hearing trains day and night cross through the city. If a little train noise doesn't keep you up, it's not bad at all. I liked it, and enjoyed seeing the mainly passenger trains travel east and west. I'm certain the ocean view rooms are very quiet at all hours. Otherwise, the hotel has been rebuilt solid. I didn't hear any of my neighboring rooms making noise and they were full. If you have any kind of disability make certain you request a room near the elevator. As in many casino type hotels, halls are long - very long! Bathrooms have Italian Marble, are large and nicely appointed. A separate bathtub and glass shower are a nice touch as is the higher end shampoos, lotions and vanity kits & terrycloth robes. Housekeeping staff were very efficient as well as extremely friendly. They always greeted you in the hallways, asking how you were, if you needed anything - a lost art in nearly all hotels.
There are flat panel tv's with good selections in pay movies and free channels. A large work desk with electric and network cable plug ins are on the desks side. A tip, no networking cable (CAT-5) are available in the rooms, or at the front desk. Since the guest rooms didn't have wireless connections, your only chance at high speed is with your networking cable. interestingly Beau Rivage has made networking cable available on each floor in the snack machines. Cost $10! (for 5 foot cord which allows only desk access) Internet was $10 per 24 hour period, and nice speeds were attained. The Valet is free (tip only) and fairly efficient. You can count on a 10-15 minute wait at checkout time each morning (10am - Noon), however only about 5 minutes at all other times. The Self Parking is a hike down some long hallways lined with high end shopping. There is a health club and spa (for a charge) and free pool with plenty of room for a crowd.
I'm not sure about how good payouts were on any of the gaming - we played a little at Boomtown and Hard Rock Casino nearby and they were both seemed comparable to their properties in Las Vegas. Your MGM Players Card good at all their properties is honored at Beau Rivage.
If you have stayed at Bellagio in Las Vegas, you will feel like you are in the same place. Yes, it is a scaled down version - and an impressive fountain is out front... but nothing like the water shows w/music outside Bellagio. Not to mention, you have Biloxi, MS instead of Las Vegas, NV as your town. However if you live in the South - it's a great alternative to the long flight or trip to Nevada. Plus the Rooms, Service and Casino are very similar to quality at Bellagio for a fraction of the cost!
